I thought I wold post a pic of the knives I submitted for my Jourenyman Smith testing this year. I had a group shot done before the Blade Show, but, sadly, it was overexposed. The photogra[pher was able to put this together from the individual shots.
They will never be in the same room again, or, for that matter, on the same continent! We'll just have to live with this.
I like to use many variable handle types and I don't just stick with one type of knife assembly. I like hot bluing, as well as simple stainless. Anyway, I mixed it up some.
There was W1, W2, (both with nice hamons) and 5160.
Not only that, but four of the five were Take-downs. The hunter was the only fixed-assembly.
I only got one "ding" from the six judges, (which was next to nothing), and that was a matter of not seeing a few things in my shop lighting that I saw when I got to Atlanta! (I'll be changing a few lights around!)
I'm sure some of you will recognize a few of these from postings when they were completed.
So, for your enjoyment:

Very nice selection Karl. Well deserved. I think the picture is nice. Your photographer gets a thumbs up. :)Lin

What was the ding, Karl?

Here are the actual Test card quotes:
1. Good Job!
2. Good work!
3.Good job.
4. Good job.
5. Passed.
6. Really nice work, but watch finish.
He went over that last comment with me, and it was in reference to a few minor scratches on the bottom of a ricasso that I did not see until I was laying them out to be judged! I swear I did not see them at home. It was a matter of lighting. Those lights were SOOOOOOOOOOOO bright that you could see the timiest little specs of dust!
Anyway - new lights at my shop.

Karl, congratulations on passing! I knew you could do it. :)

What new lights are you getting?

YIPE!!! That's atough one. Who gigged you? I know you don't need 6 out of 6 on all five knives but did he pass you anyway?

You know what, it's got his intials here, but at the moment, I forget who it was.
Absolutely, he passed me. It was just a tiny scratch.
So it was a 6 out of 6 on the five.
Phillip, they were just overhead can spot lights, but were BRIGHT and were in a soffit that was only about four feet over the tables along the wall. I guess maybe I could have placed them on the tables in the middle of the room?
Not me.

Very good looking selections, Karl. I really like the guard variety on the five. Congratulations! I have heard of numerous lighting stories from the show.

Before changing your shop lights, Google-search 'T8 fluorescents' and check them out. I switched over and it has made a world of difference in my office. More than just the energy savings they provide, much better lighting.

Thanks for the info, Joe. T8's are what I'm putting in my new shop.

I like the pic, but would like to see it BIGGER.

Congrats again on the JS my friend - well done. You already know my favorite of the bunch.

Roger

CONGRATS KARL!!!

Really nice presentation there buddy!

I have determined the only way to replicate the show and judging lighting is to have a really high ceiling with those huge halogen can lights. It seems to me, the show lighting is even more brutal than the judging room lighting.

Phillip... T8's are a great way to go! I have at least a dozen of them and will phase out the old T12's as they burn out. No buzzing with the T8's! Enough of that, don't want to hijack this thread :)

Thanks for posting them up Karl!!! :)

I kept my judging cards. One of them says, "These are SUPER NICE, but WHO actually made them???" LMAO :D

CONGRATS Karl!!

I just love your work! Each of those knives are incredible!!

Karl,
Congratulations again and nice meeting you in person. Wish we could have spent more time jawing about knives. Be seeing you next year and on the forums.

Congrats on your new stamp,Karl!
I really like 'em all, especially the stabilized Red Mallee root handled fighter just below the spalted one.
Nice pics, though I do agree with Roger,it would be cool to see them larger.
Thanks for sharing!

Doug :)

It is important to have a small "clean area" with white white walls, light flooring and fluorescent lights. You can see anything in that environment.
