JSP Rigger coating can go through metal detectors??

A friend just told me that when he spoke to James Piorek a few years ago, The knife maker told him that the rigger coating prevents metal detectors from picking up the steel blade and handle.

I found it hard to believe. Is there any truth to this?

While it sounds possible, in the realm of possibilities, that the coating might hide the material underneath it -- the handles -- it does not seem remotely possible that it could hide the blade which is not coated.

Just a few days ago, there was a thread about a G-10 knife and concealex/Kydex sheath, and how to get away from just one or two brass grommets or whatever, because they would trip a sensitive detector. I'd have to have it proven to me that an uncovered steel blade could go thru undetected.

However, I will say that I once went thru a metal detector with my CRKT Kiss used as a money clip, and had several bills not in the clip that were apparently against both sides of the knife. Had forgotten about it. Really surprised me.

The kydex sheath for the blade is rigger coated as well, so all steel parts would be covered by rigger coating.

Is this enough insulation to divert metal detectors? I tend to doubt it, but then again, I know very little about this technology.

Seems this topic pops up every now and again.

From experience in law enforcement, I can tell you it's highly unlikely that the knife will pass through without detection. But there are many parameters such as the sensitivity an individual machine or wand is set to which can ultimately effect the outcome.

Many jurisdictions will go beyond just seizing your knife and pursue prosecution if they feel that intent to violate the law was present.

Let's keep any discussion on this forum from appearing that we are trying to circumvent legal authority.

Remember, what you say here in a public forum can be used as evidence later on to show knowledge or intent. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks for your cooperation, lads.

While we all have stories about the knives we forgot we were carrying that zipped through the detector, it is rarely, if ever, because of any property of the knife, sheath, handle, or ourselves. The sensitivity on metal detectors is adjustable, and many security stations have them turned down for expediency. Just because you make it through one station doesn't mean that you'll make it through another.

Dig around the BladeRigger site BladeRigger and you'll find the description of Rigger Coat, which mentions nothing about any kind of electromagnetic shielding properties that would hide metal. And I think that's something that would definitely be promoted if it were true.

Call James at 406-844-2620 and he'll tell you more than you ever wanted to know about Rigger Coat. And do a search in general - airline carry has to be in the top 10 most discussed threads.
