I work in an office downtown and yesterday was on my way to the parking garage thinking about getting home to my wifes cooking when I became aware of a commotion across the street. A woman had exited a SUV and hobbled to the curb all the while bleeding from her knee. She collapsed on the sidewalk. I crossed the street to see if I could help. People began gathering but they were just gawking more than anything. The woman said she had been shot several miles away in an area I know is notorious for drugs and violence. I learned later that she was trying to get to the hospital when the SUV she was riding in broke down. The victim was uncooperative with police about the circumstances surrounding the shooting. I have been edcing a Leatherman Juice S2 lately. I used the scissors to open the leg of her jeans to get a look at the wound. This young lady was very lucky as the bullet had passed just under skin about an inch above her knee cap. It was a flesh wound with the entrance and exit wounds just three inches apart. By the time I got the wound exposed it had stopped bleeding. I had to prevent a well meaning gentleman from trying to apply a tourniquet. I tried my best to keep the young lady calm. All through this ordeal her baby was sitting next to her strapped into a car seat. Police, EMS and Fire arrived on the scene shortly there after. I am a knife nut who has a good folder and some type of multi (leatherman and/or SAK) on me at all times. Actually, a fine pen, reliable lighter, bright flashlight and clean handkerchief can usually be found on my person. Thats right I am one of you. I usually carry my Juice S2 during the work week because it is lightweight, sheeple bright orange friendly and easy to carry in dress slacks. I usually forgo the scissors on a multi for a saw blade but this event has developed a new appreciation for having scissors handy.
