No HALO or HAHO stuff here. I'm talking about where you jump out of the truck just for a little jaunt, maybe to go check something or a short walk. I'm not talking about overnight backpacking or bug out bags, I'm talking about that little sachel, beltpack, fanny pack, pocket kit or whatver that you grab just as you jump out of the truck with a view towards being back within the hour ... if all goes well and Mr. Murphy is on holiday.

What are you taking?

I like to take my uluchet, a whistle for me and my wife and each child if they are along, a small compass, at least my scout fire steel, a SAK or two, a multitool (usually my Swiss Tool), my trusty walking stick, usually at least a 9mm, and any tools I need with me to do whatever I'm doing.

Typically, I've got a small combined magnesium rod/fire steel, Leatherman Micra, and a Photon always on a keychain. I'll have a bottle of water, and some folding knife or multitool(CRKT M-16, SERE, REKAT Pioneer, Leatherman Wave, Gerber Multitool, etc.).
I'll often also have a length of paracord, but not always for the short little trips.

The scenario described is a variation I don't encounter often. If I jump out of my truck in the woods, I'm typically planning to be gone most of the day, not for an hour or two. For me the latter applies mostly in urban environments, but shouldn't we be prepared there too? Back in 1977 I was in the very center of NYC at about 10pm when the lights went out for 24 hours. You just never know...

So when I jump out of my car in an urban environment the small kit (a small day pack, I don't know why but I've never been big on fanny packs) I grab consists of:

1. Bottle of water, and usually a little food in the form of dried fruit, granola bars, etc.
2. Extra sweater in case the temp drops while I'm out (assuming I'm already wearing a jacket or carrying one around my waist).
3. rain tarp unless I know it won't rain.
4. Amature radio transceiver (yes I'm licensed), with one set of extra batteries, a hi-gain antenna, and a set of small earphones in case I must operate in noisy environments. If I'm outside my home area I'll also have a repeater listing for the local area.
5. Small first aid kit containing, among other usual items, some eye wash and chapstick.
6. Decent flashlight like a Scorpion or small Surefire with an extra set of batteries.
7. Watch cap and pair of work gloves.
8. Miscelaneous items like electrical tape, some paracord, lighter, and a small inexpensive fixed blade knife (my WEDGE II usually fills this role), and a SAK.

Also on me will be a folding knife (IWB), a SAK (if its not in the pack), and a photon light.

And yes, that night in 1977 when the lights went out in NYC I did indeed have a flashlight in my pack!

Typically, in the above situ I would expect the following on me:
- Midikit in a belt pouch. I call it midi (not mini) 'cause it has more and is bigger than a typical pocket Altoid kit. Contains: magnesium rod, waterproof matches, flameless torch, BIC lighter, vaseline soaked cotton balls, Coghlan's compressed waterproof tinder stick, compass, 2AA Maglite with spare batteries, DMT pocket sharpener, mylard bag, parachute cord, Polar Pure, monofilament, small hooks, snare wire, duck tape, signal mirror, Fresnel lens, SOS whistle, 2 sterile scalpel blades, Gerber Gator lockback folder, sewing needles and filament, safety pins, small piece of hanger wire.
-Leatherman Wave on belt.
-Strong 3.5 inch folder (or a 5 inch sheath knife sometimes) on belt.

I managed to drive with the above arranged strategically without problems. Nalgene water bottle, however, is just too big. Sooo, I keep its holder (elastic bottle shaped sack with belt loop) on belt when driving. I insert the bottle back into holder when walking away from car.

That works for me with little inconvenience. Next step up is that I take backpack from car.

Hope it helps,

HM

When on local trails and county parks ect. I carry a New Sun Gib Kit.In it is a photonII,sak, lighter, first aid gear and some cord.Just right for minor injuries, repears,or darkness.Of course I always have another knife or 2 on me.

I really like to have first aid gear and a cell phone when out with my kids.A point that was painfully pointed out to my wife 2 weeks ago.She was with the kids and a bunch of neighborhood families on a bike ride(I was working nights). My 8y/o daughter went face first into the pavement.Lost a perminit front tooth and banged up her face real good.Nobody had brought a phone thinking someone else would, your in a park,on bikes and you need to call 911.Bring a phone, learn first aid.If you have a medical emergency and call 911 you will get me.I've delievered babies, patched up gunshot wounds done cpr more times than I can count, but my wife would not even read a first aid book I got for her.Do your family a favor learn first aid and carry a phone.
