Ive always use a lasky croc stick setup since i was in scouts and a crappy natural stone but after i bought a lefty umnumzaan for my 21st, i decided that it would need better care.

so today, i got my shipment from knife center (great service btw). based on knifenut's recomendations, i decided to get some dmt stones because in the future, ill probably own more than one supersteel knife. i got the two sided XC/C and F/XF because im on a small college budget. i also added their dmt strop paste three pack, 6, 3 and 1 micron. i have strops drying in a vise right now but tried the stones out on some crappy kitchen knives and i can push cut paper. i have no more time tonight to play with my knives but im pretty excited at this point! :thumbup:
 
Pressure is a killer so don't use too much.
Sharpen as many knives as you can it will help to break them in.

Try the 6&3 micron compound on MDF or balsa wood, it works faster.


They make a lefty umn..... you shouldn't have told me that!
 
no, i got two, two sided benchstones, not the big 8 inch ones though, i think theyre closer to 6 and about 2 inches wide
 
good pick wyatt. I am also a college student but felt I needed to put a little extra into something as important as sharpening stones. I love mine as well. Good luck to you.

so ive gotten ok with freehand, but as i get to the dmt extra fine, i look at the bevel real close under light i see that i have some issues maintaining the same angle. with that i get get the knife to shave hair with pressure but wasnt really happy with it so, i decided to try the paste on cardboard.

i would have used my strops but they arent with me at my apartment, theyre drying 50 miles away. after i loaded 3 small strips of cardboard, i realized corrugated probably wasnt ideal. even so, after working my sog flash2 for a bit (dont take this knife apart by the way, springs and detents go flying) i got an edge that will pop leg hairs when shaving. very rewarding!
