I have the following tapes (tape series) and would be willing to do reviews if anyone is interested:

Vee Arnis-jitsu (a series - can't remember the name of the guy who did it), Dog Brothers (original series), Pukulan Pentjak Silat Bukti-negara (by Paul DeThours), Pukulan Pentjak Silat Sera (by Victor DeThours), Pukulan Pentjak Silat Cimande (by William Sanders), and (if I've gotten it back - loaned it out) Hock Hocheim's series. I may have others of interest, but I'd have to look.

I'll do reviews on any that you guys express an interest in so let me know.

Thanks,

Dave.

I'm glad a lot of you are taking the effort to review videos. I don't like them in general but I'd be interested to hear about the Vee-Arnis-Jitsu ones (Florencio Visitacion and David James?) because I used to study at that school in NYC.

Please do! The Vee Arnis Jitsu tapes have gotten Martial Arts' Video Reviews highest accolades, bar none. MAVR has not reviewed the others mentioned, except maybe Hock's, and they speak highly of him as well.

Im interested in a review of Vee-Arnis-Jitsu and the Sanders PJK Silat.
thanks in advanced.

I'm interested in ALL of them even if I have one of the DB and the Vee Arnis Jutsu tapes coming. Definitely want to see Hocheim.

Wow!

I guess I have my work cut out for me. It will take a few days to get the first one out, but stay tuned.

Dave.

Hi,

I would like to see a review on the Hoch Hochiem(sp?) tapes.

Thanks,
~Kev

jrf and co. thanks again.
jrf has touched on an important subtlety of the various knife forums. It's the posters that keep it alive, I've seen a few boards decline because of inactivity.

I happen to like tape reviews because after awhile we all get to the point where we know footwork and grips and numbering system. BTW, I haven't seen the perfect book or video for a beginner yet.

I'm actually starting to wind down my collecting. I've sold or given away most of my collection and taken down my homepage.

Unlike other tape review pages, we can respond and talk about it and all reviews are opinions. I don't pretend to know it all but I know I value a true source of info and there's not many tapes I watch over and over.
Same goes with books.

Smoke,

I don't think you will ever find the perfect book or tape for a beginner, because there's no such thing, IMHO.

Books, and even more so tapes are great "training aids". They are useful for reviewing what you've been taught if you study that particular system. They're also quite useful to an advanced FMA player who already understands the principles of their own system and can look at tapes of another FMA system and extrapolate.

IMHO, these are the only people who really benefit from instructional tapes because a complete beginner lacks an understanding of the basics and therefore will miss a lot of the details and not learn the material correctly.

Again, just my opinion.

Sincerely,

Dave.

Smoke: You've started a beautiful trend!

Dave Fulton: HELL YES, I'd be interested! MAVR does a fine job but they don't claim to have anyone on board that has a background in Silat and their Kali is mostly limited to the JKD variety. Nothing wrong with that but sure would like to hear your P.O.V.

Can anyone recommend good tapes for FMA or knife related topics? I'v seen a bunch of tapes and frankly they haven't taught me anything that I didn't already know. I'm not an advanced student in Kali but I've found that training in real life gives me a million times more than a videotape. In fact, most of the videotapes I've seen have been so basic and even advanced tapes have nothing new.

I saw parts of the Vee-Arnis-Jitsu tapes when they were being produced and I liked them because they were so thorough, systematic and comprehensive.

Can anyone recommend good books either? I've read a lot of them and there also is nothing new when it comes to technique and brilliant when it comes to the realm of common sense like with MacYoung.

Jason

Jason, I'm a believer in simplicity for fighting and there aren't many tapes I watch over again. There are good tapes but they don't hold my interest.

I'd be interested in reviews of
- Vee Arnis-jitsu
- Pukulan Pentjak Silat Bukti-negara by Paul DeThours
- Pukulan Pentjak Silat Sera by Victor DeThours
- Hock Hocheim's series

I would be interested in a review of Victor and Paul deThouars' tapes

Dave,

I have Stevan Plinck's video and Richard De Bordes if you'd like to review those as well.
