On this date Carl Elsener patented his pocket knife (or so my calendar says), and the Swiss Army Knife was born.

They make over 34,000 knives per day.

My one wish would be for them to use a better steel. A Tinker with BG-42 or 154CM or even 440C at a good hardness would get my attention

I like the steel. It sharpens very easy, is very rust resistant, and keeps the cost down. 154CM or ATS-34 would probably make SAK's price rise a lot, however 440C is a good lower cost steel that would perform well.

But I don't think they need a better steel. The blades are thin enough and acute enough to cut well and hold an edge. I mostly use the knife blade for whittling or cutting food and it works for me. I like the corrosion resistance and the thin profile of the blade. For any bigger job's I just use a bigger knife.

Using a premium steel on several models wouldn't be a bad thing, though, for people who use their SAK blades a lot. I don't find anything wrong with what their using now.
