I want to step up from carrying my ratmandu hiking to bringing a more serious blade. Kind of to try it out with my hiking/hunting system. I like to carry a big tool like this hunting/hiking in case I get lost or something stupid and need to stay alive in the frosty Canadian outdoors- but I dont want to carry a big axe or anything

I can validate a rodent 9 over the junglas because Im selling an unused scope thats been lying around but it is definitely pretty expensive- especially since Ill be putting a kydex sheath on it and probably will end up putting a fire making pouch on it as well.

So- has anyone felt both handles and whats the comparison? Im not looking strictly for a chopper, more like something that can baton like crazy but can also be pressed into chopping. I dont like that about carrying the Ratmandu as I already carry a small blade for fine work- the RMD is a heavy paperweight because it cant chop that well and also doesnt do near as good a job with small stuff as the $15 Mora I have.

Sounds like you already have your mind set on a big F.B. But a little Wetterlings or G.B. hip carried hatchet can whip up a quick kindling pile also. Just another option...

No experience with the rat, but my junglas is a chopping beast and it handles batonning with ease.

Having used both I would say Junglas if you are taking a small knife as well, but I would take the Rodent 9 if you are only taking one knife.

I don't have any experience with the rat 9 either but I don't think you can go wrong either way, especially if you can afford the 9. I love my Junglas. It chops and batons quite well. The sheath system for the Junglas is amazing and would be hard to match aftermarket for the Rat 9. Just something to think about...
