junglas vs 6

So I've been doing a little shopping around for some esee's lately, and im just a little confused at the reason for the price point of some of the knives I see at some of the online distributers. it seems that on most sites the Esee 6 actually costs more than the junglas once you upgrade the 6's sheath to the Molle back(which the junglas already ships with) so the junglas comes out about $5 cheaper . To me this defies all logic seeing that the junglas is basically twice the size of the 6. This really starts me thinking how high the make up really is for these knives . but I still think they make some great blades, and I don't mind paying a bit extra for a great design, and something I can depend on (besides they look awesome!)

If you don't like em, don't buy em? They're worth every penny, taking everything into account, including the warranty. I have both, and use both. Are you an axe and belt knife guy, or a big chopper guy?

I got my Junglas for $160, my 6 for I think $65. I then paid for a custom sheath which ended up around $35-$40 total. Both seemed fair prices to me.

I never said I don't like um, there about my favorite hard use knives out there, It just seems a little weird to me. I had a 6 a few years back but it seemed to have grown legs while I was on vacation ( or got stolen ) the cheapest I could find a 6 was for around $110.

I like me a good mid size belt knife, something I will always have on me while out adventuring just in case. Ive never owned a junglas, or any other big chopper for that matter. I feel like it would be a size/weight restraint for what I usually want it for,and because I have an axe for when im in/near civilization. I have however spent a lot of time in Hawaii where the machete is king, and will usually pack one when I can.

I am currently trying to challenge what I think I know about blade size and types but there is a lot to consider, especially when you consider different environments and locales.

Couple of things: First, the machining and finishing costs of the blade and handle are probably pretty close. So, even though the Junglas is twice the size, the material cost difference is the main issue, and that isn't that big. Micarta and 1095 aren't expensive. Also, the MOLLE backer for the 5/6 is way more involved and complicated than the Junglas backer. The sheaths are different as well. I know the mold cost for the ESEE plastic sheaths (3 and 6) were very expensive and Jeff has stated many times the kydex is cheaper and easier. That's why most models have Kydex, even though in many ways the plastic is superior. So, I think the production cost is probably pretty close for those two blades and buyers likely still pay a premium to offset the 6 sheath tooling cost.

I have both and love them. The 6 is a great all-around knife. The Junglas is an incredible big knife. If you need/want a big knife, I think it may just be the best of the breed. It won't replace a machete for real machete use, but is a great chopper, has great steel, great ergonomics, and is just extremely versatile. Take care.
