Hi all,

Has anyone compared the two of these knives side by side?

Keeping price out of the comparison I would like to know the pros and cons of both.

Cheers

Dan

I have both and in fact just did a comparison chop-off with them last week. They both performed about the same. Despite being the same weight (22 oz.), I'd say the Golok is much quicker in the hand. The fact that it has a much thinner handle than the Junglas might have something to do with my perception of that, as I prefer thinner handles. But that's not to say the Junglas' handle is thick and unwieldly; it does feel nice in its own right. The Junglas definitely has a tougher v-edge than the Golok's very thin (and as I found out the other day on a coconut... hey, I just tapped it) delicate convex grind edge. The sheath for both are nice, but the Junglas' kydex/molle back is super-versatile and convenient, whereas the Golok's leather Sharpshooter sheath is standard an simple. I don't have alot of experience with 1095 yet so I can't really comment on it (other than so far so good), but I have had rust/oxidation issues with the 1080... not actually on the Golok but on the Bark River Camp Axe that uses the same steel. I can get both steels crazy sharp, and they held great edges during the chopping I've put them through. Not sure what else to say, other than the usual BladeForums refrain: GET BOTH!:D They are really both fantastic knives. I fully intend on picking up future editions of the Golok as/if they come out in different steels. I'm sorry I missed out on the A2 version awhile back. Here's some pics for you guys.

I like 'em both

You could drop 45 bucks to land a Kumunga and a Condor Golok, just to give you an idea of which basic design you what to spend the 200 bucks on. Plus it'd give you two awesome quality backups.

I have not had the chance to even see a BRKT golok, but I have done a SXS comparison with the Junglas and both Condor knives PR mentioned.
The kumunga isn't bad, but it's totally outclassed buy the golok & Junglas. It's very light in hand and that translated into "less than stellar" chopper in my hands.
The Condor Golok felt great in hand, chopped good, sliced well, and was even used to "mow" a patch of very tall grass in a friends back yard to make a spot where he could start his mower.
The Junglas chops well, slashes pretty good, and splits wood for the grill with no problem (I know, batonning is evil... but it's fun)
both blades were very handy/efficient helping me thin (i.e. eradicate) a dogwood & locust thicket that came up in the wrong spot. I really like the grip on the Junglas and the sheath is fantastic for versatility.

good luck getting more reviews on the BRKT.

+1, get both!

i' was eyeing the Golock before the Junglas came out.

haven't had a chance to see either in person, but they both look like good options.

didn't know they'd changed from A2 on the Golock.

Nice review. Also liked all the pictures. Both seem equally capable for their intended uses.

I haven't used a BRKT golok personally, but I do believe it would be a better chopper by some degree, if that is what you are looking for. The sheath isn't as good(IMO) as the Junglas, though. I would say see if you can handle them both and then make a decision. If I had to chose one, it would be the Junglas.

I have both, I cant add much more in pics to what is already up there. I will say that for chopping, the Bark river is in its own class for that size of knife. It has to do with the lines of the knife and edge geometry. It is made out of 1080Cr, they changed it from A2 so it could take more of a beating in that size blade and the edge will be more likely to roll then chip. Even A2 chips a little. It sharpens crazy easy. I do not have a 10-11 inch blade that chops better for me.

Now that said.... the Junglas is my favorite. If you look at it, it is much more of a all around blade. The Golok is not much of a last ditch defense tool. the tip on the junglas is more the fine:D It does more then well enough in chopping but is light in the hand enough to act as a heavy machete. Also with the grippy micarta, the Junglas is a lot less likely to slip out of my hands when i get sweaty palms. The Golok with its nicely polished G10 keeps wanting to take off on me when it gets oiled.
The sheaths, well the comments above are pretty much spot on. If i had to recommend one over the other, i would say the junglas, simply due to increased versatility and the handle. That said, i have about 5 times the barkies then ESEE knives. They are a top quality company. but then again so is ESEE:thumbup:

Not sure if that helps
