Yesterday I got out to one of my favorite places here in Central Brazil. When I first came upon this area ten years ago it was an unregulated patch of wilderness of about 140 square km. It has since been declared the Uaimii Forest Reserve.

Central Brazil is a place where you can have jungle and desert-like conditions side by side. The Cerrado is dry land filled by scrub brush.

In areas where there is water year round you have what is called Mata Atlantica, single canopy jungle. The cool thing about it is that they border each other so you have to practice desert and jungle skills in the same place.

You literally go from what for all practical purposes is desert, draw the machete and start hacking through jungle.

I didn't know such terrain existed in Brazil. When I think of Brazil I either think of Rio or the Amazon. Thanks for posting.

i would love to hike terrain like this:

we have "similar" terrain here in BC, but i'd have to drive all the way to lilloet/lytton area to get to it.

Brazil is about as large as the lower 48 and every bit as varied in terrain. Yes we have the world's largest rainforest but also some of the largest deserts and swamps as well. I happen to live in the transition between several different zones so depending on the time of year and the direction I head things can be very different.

Found this great map

mapabiomas0057993.gif

Caatinga = Desert
Amazonia = Rainforest
Pantanal = Swamp
Mata Atlantica = Single canopy jungle
Pampas = Savannah
Cerrado = Scrub Brush

Not on the map...

Campo Rupestre = Tropical Alpine, found on mountains above about 4500 feet

It looks like a beautiful country. I'd like to visit someday. BTW, congrats on getting the Olympics.

In 1971 Brasilia was a shanty town and growing rapidly.
I haven't been there since.
What I see on the "Nooz" amazes me..........
