kanochris,
I just got a pair of the Russian Garsing boots from www.redsoldier.com and they seem to be a great boot. The price is right and their is really no needed break in period. The leather is soft, But sturdy! And light weight is not the word for them. I don't think you can go wrong. I have the winter weight with the fur lining and the spike fold down sole. So I can imagine the Summer weight being even lighter.
Have a safe journey and God Bless!

in the tropics? the word is... flip-flop! It's great to have a good pair of boots, but even better to have a pair of boots and flip-flops. The best situation will be two pairs of good boots, two pairs of light fabric sneakers, and a pair of flip-flops. You're gonna wanna change those suckers every chance you get. You need to dry your feet out every couple of hours or you'll have a case of athelete's foot sooo bad that you'l consider cutting your feet off. Lots of foot powder and stuff for jock itch too.

my everyday boot, plus 'Nam 100,000 mile tire sandal's for 2 year's. Okinawa the 'Phine's and 'Nam, handled the veried terrain well. Just wore a pair this year to a very rocky and chilly Maine Island.Rock's and sea water no problem ,only some lite scuffing on the leather.Only additional recomndation is get some Snow Seal leather treatment and put as much as the leather will absorb. http://www.jungletraining.com/altama.htm

Hi
I will have some Lite shoes/sandles with me
I am temped to carry some of the New wave of lite weight hikers
I see that everybody is making them now.
Or Maybe a pair of Merrils??? I am use to desert and woods
so this is some new ground for me .But when I was over in Oct we were out hunting monkeys .I watched an old man {63+ go} stright up the side of a mountain .
He was wearing Flip Flops !!!! and carring a A.Lite too .I was inpressed to say the least .
regards
Chris

I have a pair of Wellco Tuffcushions, and they are very comfortable. Because they are jungle boots, they are cool in the heat, and they drain well if wet. the only drawback I found is that they don't offer much in the way of ankle support over rough terrain.

Look at www.wellco.com before you buy Altamas. Wellco pioneered the direct molded sole technology uded in the speedlace leg, jungle and desert boots and is probably a bigger military boot contractor than Altama. I'm not knocking Altama--Wellco's just a better value other things equal. That said, I don't see Mil. Spec. boots on Wellco's site right now--they may be selling them all to the military...
