This is kind of off topic, but since ESEE runs jungle survival training I was hoping I might find an answer here.

My buddy and I were watching Book of Eli the other night and talking about the cannibal shakes. Then the question came up if a person might not have the same thing happen to them from eating monkey. I tried googling that question but didn't find anything more than people talking about monkey brains and stupid stuff.

So my question is, can a person sustain on eating monkey? And are there any side affects to eating monkey, such as the cannibal shakes?

I think that was more made up for the movie... Eat all the monkeys you'd like, pretty sure you'll be shake free.

Monkey is like any other mammal meat. Just cook it well done and you are good to go.

My Brother ate one in Honduras when he was down there and he said it was salty enough to require beer. :D

I dunno, but do cannibals really get tremors in their hands anyway?

My understanding is the shakes come from your body trying to break down the same amino acids it is made out of. That's what I was told anyway.

Good to know monkeys are safe. Although there aren't many up here in Alaska.

It's just hollyweird hoo-ha, you wouldn't get the shakes.

Case in point, Dahmer ate nothing but people meat from his victims for a good while before he was finally caught and didn't have the shakes. Nor did that Uruguayan rugby team that crashed in the Andes and had to resort to eating folks.

Does it taste good?
I've eaten monkey meat, it was pretty tough. Had to boil it awhile to tenderize it. Then my older brother pulled out a tendon and told my sisters it was a worm, killed their appetites :). I don't care for it the way the Indians prepared it - instead of skinning it, they singed the hair off over the fire, and I don't think you can *ever* get rid of that burnt hair smell. There are lots of better-tasting critters in the jungle :).
