I just received Hattori Fighter and Baby Hattori. Old Hattories, as I know, was made in Japan and steel was MVS-8. New knives are made in Taiwan and a blade stamped 440SS. According to Gutmann Cutlery answer on my e-mail "The blades of the Hattori Fighters with the 440SS stamp are made from 440C steel." I'm a little disappointed that the knives made in Taiwan (that was surprise for me), but they are still look like nice knives for the price. Hattori Fighter is really well made and Baby Hattori have minor problem on the wooden part of handle - Gutmann Cutlery:"The handle of the Baby Hattori is made from two pieces (or one split piece) of wood and a seam (not a cavity) where they meet is often visible."

I was looking a Baby Hattori about a year ago. It also had a small gap between the pieces of the handle. I could hold it up and see light. It’s quite dry where I live. I wonder if the wood shrunk. It was a nice knife. I was tempted, but decided to pass. I think the store still has it.

Just discovered this one - Katz Alley Kat:

The guard and the blade (except of serrations) looks identical. Can they be made by same manufacturer?

440C steel? Hmm...that's pretty good. I would have thought 440A whenever they don't specify. I've been eyeing the Hattori fighters too.

Same here, but that...

...is a major turn-off to me.

I also can't understand why isn't stamped 440C if that's 440C

I had a Hattori Fighter years ago. And it was made in Seki Japan. It was priced much higher than shown in Smokey Mountain Knives. And IIRC it was marked with AUS steel. I do not know if any of their specs have changed in these Taiwan models. But the original ones were terrifically balanced. And very fast and maneuverable in the proper hands. It was a real fighting knife. And looked quite fancy as well. :)

Sorry, doesn't work! :(
Strange. Works for me, but generally you can see 2 lines ~ 0.3mm - on the top and on the bottom of wooden part of handle, separate it on 2 parts about 1/4 and 3/4.
