After doing several searches on this board, I have the impression, that Junglee isn't very popular, mainly due to their design ripoffs. But could anyone offer some information about their heat treating, or some RC-values of their knives (especially waterloo and short sword)? I didn't find any nformation on their website as well. Did they just forget the heat treating, or what?

thank you

I own a couple of Junglee folders, and they make a decent knife...not top of the line, but not bad. And some of their fixed blade knives are excellent.

According to the Junglee literature, most of their knives are made from AUS-8, and the Rc is approximately 57.

Junglee actually is fairly popular. Their design rip offs aren't really that much of a rip off. Except the Sahara folder series, which seem a little Emerson-like, but they use very different handle materials. Still, I would consider it a slight knockoff, though not as bad as some other companies who use the CQC-7 and copy everything and just use cheaper materials (plastic instead of G-10, cheap stainless instead of titanium liners).

Jeff Randal, did a good review of one in Tactical Knives magazine, and on the Wilderness and survival forum. And I think that a few others here also evaluated some.

Have you searched the knife reviews and testing?

Junglee make a great knife for the price. I have the Waterloo and so far no negatives. It's light, wellbalanced, perfect grindlines, and has a very ergonomic handle design. When I first saw the groves cut across the handle I was alittle concerned but they turned out to be one of the best features of the handle design. When held in a forward or reverse grip your fingers fall naturally into these soft groves making for a truely none slip grip. The RC hardness of the AUS-8 on the Waterloo is 57-59(+or - 1). Take a look at their AUS-10 lightweight folders they are nice. Email me if you have any Questions.

Yeah! a Junglee topic! I used to like Junglee stuff, even though they do rip off other designs. They seem to have a thing for ripping off SOG fixed blades though, and now I don't think that is so cool. Look at their Green Beret (sog pentagon), Marco Polo or Water Loo (sog desert dagger), Special forces concealed carry knife (sog mini seal), Pacific Hunter (knifecenter compares this to the seal 2k as a selling point), and then their hatori fighter in both sizes is almost the exact same thing as the Katz ally cat in both sizes. Their fixed blades are not all that bad. The more expensive ones have very good fit and finish because they are made in the exact same place most of SOG's stuff is made--Seki Japan. But when you compare their copied stuff to the orriginals, often they cost about the same, so you might as well get the original. Just don't buy that tactical gurka fixed blade--I had it and it is nothing but a curved prybar. I didn't call it a "sharpened" curved prybar because it wasn't sharp--it was just a shank of steel with a rubber handle. The more expensive things are nicer though. I've heard their folders suck. The look cheap too.

I had one of the Junglee Hattori Fighters, but sold it to get money for more custom knives. I found nothing wrong with the knife, and it was probably the nicest factory knife I had ever owned.

I've got one of Junglee's folders. The "Marshall" with Zytel (?) handle, and AUS8 blade. It actually is a very attractive knife, the clip point blade is very sharp, and has a beautiful satin finish. The handle is very comfortable in the hand, and the action is incredibly smooth and fast (one of the smoothest knives I've got). The only down side is the knife is so light, that it doesn't feel very strong. It cuts great, but I can't help question its durability, especially if you are one to really punish your knives. There is a metal handled version of the marshall(stainless?) that might be tougher.

I'm not sure about the Katz/Junglee connection, but I know a little about Junglee's background. If I remember correctly, this all goes back to a company called Grizzly Imports that sells (I believe) woodworking and metalworking machinery imported from overseas. The company began a mail-order knife catalog called Gorilla & Sons - that's where I saw the Junglee name first pop up. Back in about '97 or '98 the company bought Gutmann Cutlery and stopped selling mail-order. I'm not sure if Gutmann and Grizzly still have a connection, but I'm pretty sure the Junglee brand was designed as a way to copy popular designs, make them overseas, import them to the US & sell them for significantly less. Another brand name I recall from the G&S catalog was GKT - the same basic concept but lower-quality pieces. Again, I'm relying upon my increasingly faulty memory for this, but I got most of it from a guy I work with -- he used to sell advertising to G&S & Grizzly.
