Hi all. Have a question about a "knife" I have. It is a Junglee short sword that I bought from someone off the forum a year or so ago. It is made in Seki and is of AUS8 steel. The blade is around 20" or so, I think. How tough is a blade made of this steel in this length? Can it be used as a machete, chopping small branches etc? I have used it for chopping some weeds and such, but figured before I did any heavy use that I would ask around and see what this AUS8 can take. Thanks in advance for any info.

Best wishes, John

That sword is a beauty, looks like it can take a beating as well. As long as it's not too thick I'm sure it will work as a machete. AUS 8 if properly heat treated, can make a tough blade.

Thanks for the info and the awesome video. I guess I won't have to baby this thing then. I used it last fall to chop up some old squash plants when we cleaned up the garden and it worked great for that. I was just concerned that the blade may be too brittle for branches and such. Thanks again and best wishes to all.

It's marketed as a machete and as far as I can see, it's about the only thing it could be used for...so I imagine it should handle the tasks of a machete fairly well.
