Well, I followed all of the advice carefully; grit of sandpaper, removal of red polishing compound with mineral spirits, etc. Man oh man, I can't believe how gorgeous the handle on my 18" AK looks after only one coat of Tru-Oil. When I'm finished I'll ask one of you all to indulge me by helping to post a pic. This is a must see!

Thanks Steve for the tips in an old post. The grain in this wood handle is stunning. And you know, I thought it was really pretty before. Amazing, isn't it?

Ben, if you have the patience, wait till you have about 10 coats on it. I'm on coat 16 of a WWII, and it's fantastic, as you say. Congratulations.

I learned from Walosi. Someone else will learn from you. The circle remains unbroken.

Steve:cool:

Once you get it done(and I agree that 10 coats is a good goal, if not more), email me a picture and I'll post it for you. If you need more help than that, one of us will be glad to help

I'm going to print this thread and throw it under the bed to the dust bunnies but doubt that it will do any good.

Like Bill I'm pretty lazy sometimes myself. I have four of my village models left in my possesion at the time and am thinking I will hang onto them for wurk khuks.:D
Well, might give one more of them away, but it will be awhile as I have to make sure my Sis is gonna keep this guy around long term.
They're talkin marriage so maybe this one is gonna be the keeper and if so he will need a khuk of his own.:D
I've thought about finishing one or more of the handles that have some really nice grain, but haven't gotten off my duff to do anything about it as yet.
The handle on the one I use the most has turned quite a lot darker just from the use and it has brought out a lot of color in the grain, pretty.
There's some rough spots on the handle that would look better if taken out, but they don't hamper the knife from wurkin' so why bother?
And I haven't done anything to the blade other than sharpen it to a nicely polished edge so although there isn't a patina on it as yet there are some stains.
I'm thinkin' on lettin it be a real Nepali Khuk so even some rust won't hurt it. :p

I've found that working on these wood handles helps me to relieve the stress of the day. I'm taking my time and I have to khuks to go after this one. Then I'll work on the 12" Villager. I will have to buy more just to keep stress free. I wonder if my doctor wrote a prescription for this, would my insurance cover it? :)
