ill start off with i go camping and hiking but round here only camping places are campsites so i like carving stuff in free time. but i have few questions. first; how do yall carve the bowl part of those wooden spoons i tried making one here at home but ended up using aa actual wood carving tool that i wouldnt take camping. and before someone tells me something like "learn to use google" i went through three pages of google results on spoon making and they all used wood carving tools. and second, since im making a thread anyway and im sure some, like me, love to answer questions they know about, how do you guys turn wood into kindling in case im camping in a different camp ground without pine needles. yeah sure i can youtube it but i like being able to talk with the person who answered easier.

Spoon knife, crooked knife, woodworking chisels, fire/coals, or a rock. You can also do it with certain knife tips if it has the proper curve, but it's a fair bit of work.

As for kindling, you can use your knife to make curls/shavings. And you can use a hatchet/axe or large knife to baton the kindling. You'll want to look up safety for axes (search "Handtools for Trail Work Part 2" and see what he says about keeping the handle parallel with the ground. Lots of people round their strikes, and it works for these experienced people, but it is extremely dangerous with a high chopping block, and you even see this in "An Axe to Grind" which is otherwise excellent.) and how to limit the force on the weak point of your second knife when batonning. Basically it's just a matter of hitting with appropriate power in the situation and not using too much force with your handle hand - just push the handle back down after the strike to keep the blade parallel to the ground.

A lot of campgrounds don't want you using material though, so you'll have to check their rules and work with the wood you bring in or what they sell.

the campsite i go to they turn their head if its gathered but when youre chopping it off is when they say something. and thanks ill look that up. for the crude spoon i made i used a cheep wood work chisel laying round but i was curious if it was possible without it

Hi blade dude.

Lots of whittling tips over in the Workshop forum ...

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/f...-Workshop-Projects-Tools-Techniques-amp-Ideas

Lots of fire starting threads in this forum ... try the search using "fire"

Yes, in campsites, the resources can be gutted by the many users in small space over time ... so the environment is understandably protected by staff. Parks, camps. You and I and others may enjoy this environment into the future provided no one 'takes' it today. There are many threads in this forum regarding 'no footprint' use of natural resources. It may seem like a wilderness, but that is because others have been prevented from depleting it before you. it would be stripped and paved over ... if use in past had been unregulated versus the onslaught of users in past.

Many of us are seeking 'how to' on the basics like you are. Tinder, kindling, fire starting ... basic tool making. Welcome to the search and know that you have chosen the best forum to learn self-sufficiency at all levels.

I'm not quite sure why you wouldn't take a spoon knife with camping. They take up little space, and if you're camping at camp sites that frown on gathering local materials, you are "Car camping"; still, if you're hiking in, a Spoon knife weighs little.

I haven't made a lot of spoons and wouldn't say I'm great at making them. Its been years since I made one out of wood (I now just carry a titanium spork). But in the past I have either used a rock with a pinch of sand or small coal to make the bowl shape on a spoon.
