Decided to get out for a quick hike yesterday...the predicted floods of the previous night had not materialized.
A quick shot of the view just starting in:
Pretty blue flowers:
Which the bugs just loved (need a better camera than this crappy cellphone one):
Someone had put down a few small logs to bridge one of the swampier parts:
I decided to test out the Cold Steel Vaquero with full serrations as a trail knife (it's designed as a fighting knife, but I don't get attacked by many ninjas or zombies, so it better work at something else
):
Pic along the trail:
A huge tree has fallen across the path, so the trail now swerves around it:
These tall grasses were the main thing the Vaquero had to contend with:
Some of the taller ones have little thorny protrusions that scratch the hell out of your skin.
On the big trail out, an old lady was walking her dog. I saw her leash him in, and make him sit. It looked like she might be looking for a phone number, or possibly be taking a photo. When I got closer, I saw this:
An adorable baby rabbit.
Due to the presence of the dog, it had chosen the "Perhaps if I don't move, no one can see me!" strategy. This allowed me to crawl closer and get this shot:
I was almost able to get a closer shot, but the lady left with her dog, and as soon as his face was pointed the other way, the rabbit beat feet into the shrubbery posthaste.
The Vaquero did great on the tall grasses...cut them like a short machete.
It also took care of some small branches that were encroaching on the trail.
I did notice that the third serration scallop from the tip had a chip out of it, probably from the branches.
The little, tiny "teeth" of the smaller serrations that Cold steel uses, some of them were bent; Spyderco's serration pattern is far more robust.
I was able to fix up the edge damage okay later on though...after I pulled off the first tick that has ever bitten me!
