Hey everyone, I haven't posted that recently and I'm pretty sure this one post will be fine. If you have been following my posts you would know I was in debate about the RC-4 and RC-6. Well, as we speak (or should I say right after this post) I am ordering an RC-4...
Should I explain? Well, I just think it is the most practical at the moment for me, that and I am ready to just get something and go out and enjoy the weather (I never knew Florida could go through such a spontaneous change in weather over one night, it's actually nice and cooled down today where I am) with that said, I also believe I have found a solution to my chopping needs: A Tramontina. I had no Idea what that was before this week, and I have to say, wow. My only question though is what people that have experience with them chose for the design, like bolo, bush, etc etc, and what I should get ready for when I get one. I know they don't come very sharp, I am still figuring that one out since they are a little big for the newly arrived sharpmaker. (I love it)
To top this all of I am getting a bag of some sort off county comm for outside use and I believe the BOB regular size is a good model. Still thinking that one out too :/. So yeah, just updating, and wanting to know what people think of my setup. Oh, and good luck in Peru RAT, that should be very fun.

Congrats and enjoy the RC4 - you will love it.

Just a quick note: if I remember correctly, you are a minor - make SURE you check out your local carry laws and run this by your parents if they don't already know - as the RC4 is over 4" you would get in more trouble than you need carrying it concealed on you or in your bag. Not even going to touch the machete!

You may also want to make sure you can, in the first place, legally carry ANYTHING other than a SAK or small lockback as a minor in FL... I have no idea what FL law says.

Not that age necessarily correlates with maturity or state of mind, but, law is law so just cover your ass.

With that said, enjoy, be safe and have fun out there!!!

i got the 18" latin style, and cut it off where the grindended. it's a golok style now, and about 15". tramontinas kick ass.
you can do almost anything with a tramontina and an izula.

Sounds like a good setup. Eventually if you do spend a lot of time in the woods, You'll slowly find out what all else it is that you need to get/study/learn. When you encounter a problem, and you will many many many times, just relax, and improvise. Then when you get back, I'm sure it won't be hard to find advice on the matter :)

Thanks, I will clarify If I can have it. How do you fix tramonitas, I hear they come messed up

Does everyone consider this a good choice for an out doors lose looking kind of setup? I really really wanted the Sat Comm day pack style bag, it seemed more my style, but they currently don't make them. I haven't gotten my bag yet, still debating.

A machete and an RC4?
Sure, why wouldn't it be?

You maybe could have gone lighter and gotten the RC3 if pairing it with a machete, but the RC4 will do just fine.

As for machete type, since I never did answer that, I like the cane knife style:

Little more forward weight, better for harder stuff, since we do run into harder woods and stuff like sugar cane and bamboo here in FL, IMO this is the better option.

The pic above is a Tram model 26628/018

<cough>Or you could go to Himalayan Imports and get a kukri. . .<cough, cough>

As far as bags go, until you really get into doing crazy stuff like speed hiking, mointianeering, heavy packing, or expedition length jaunts in the woods, anything with two straps and a belt is gonna be good. Go cheap now, and when you find your niche, you'll know exactly what you need. I've made the mistake of spending tons on the best XXX in the world, only to get out there and realize 'this thing stinks for me!'

On the bag (how'd I miss that part of the post??). . .

It's not as tacticool, but a used medium ALICE pack makes a great daypack. Can usually get them for $20-$30 off eBay with straps and no frame. IMO you shouldn't need a frame or a waist belt for the weight carried in a day pack.

I don't know about the other guys here, but I tried the shoulder and sling bags, and they just don't work well for me. It feels much better to have the weight suspended from both shoulders.

I bet the reason you like the bag is you figured on lashing the machete along its length, right? That would be handy, as long as sling bags work for you.

Another backpack choice of about the same carrying capacity as the County Comm bag is the Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon -- popular with the RAT folks and more than a few on the forum.

Best thing to do for a bag is try them on. EMS, dicks sporting goods, and the like should have plenty on hand, and should have ballast sacks so you can see how it feels loaded.
