Hello,

Now that I believe that Buck is no longer having their knives made in China, will the Chinese made Bucks become collectable items.

Or am I completely wrong on this ?.

Buck's website lists a bunch of knives made in China. I don't think they have stopped.

This subject gets revisited and rehashed regularly. Buck knives still has an import line to meet the price needs of WalMart shoppers and other big box stores. See this recent thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-percentage-of-Buck-knives-are-made-in-the-US

As to collectability, probably not so much. For most the "China" stigma will always be a barrier. Personally I have a very nice collection of the 370 and 380 series pocket knives, perhaps 60 or 70 of them. They came in a wonderful array of different handle materials and the quality is decent for the price point. Buck does a good job overseeing their import quality.

Not current picture but here are a sample of just 2 models, the 389 Canoes and 385 Toothpicks...

I probably don't know a thing about marketing, but I don't think Buck needs to make knives in China to meet the needs of Wal-Mart Shoppers. I think they just place the wrong knives in stores. I mean, while $37 is more than reasonable for a Buck 110, they are sitting beside $15-$20 dollar Knives from other companies. For the average Joe buying a hunting and fishing license and decides he's going to pick up a knife, they'll usually grab the cheaper knife.
I think the 110 and 112 ecolites priced around $20 (what I paid for mine online) would have really sold at Wal-Mart and found a whole new generation of followers instead of being discontinued. That's
what turned me onto Bucks when I was a 16 year old kid buying my first real knife. I just had to have a Bucklite. If the only Buck knife Wal-Mart had carried at the time was a more expensive model, I probably wouldn't be into Buck knives today.
Maybe the paperstone ecolites are carried by some Wal-Marts, but the only Bucks any of my local Wal-Mart carries are the 110 and a Chinese made solo and stockman.
I think the 110/112 ecolite would outsell most of the knives in their price range if they were offered at Wal-Mart.

My Wal-Mart carries the 110, but nothing else I like. They don't carry the 119 anymore and they have never (to my knowledge) carried any of the Vantage line. I wish the would sell some of the more traditional looking ones that are not Chinese. Just my personal preference, and I own Chinese knives, but if I want a Buck it will have to be made in the USA. They sell tons of ammo and firearms costing over $1000 I would think there would be some room to move some nicer knives too.

True. Didn't mean to imply the only sell 110s and Chinese stuff, just listing some of the ones I would buy, but cant.

Wherever I'm on the hunt for old Buck Knives I always run into the same ignorant people. They tell me "Bucks are Chinese made now" I don't know where they get their information from.

I just tell them they need to get out (of WalMart) more often ..... :D

I have actually seen more U.S. made Bucks at Wal-Mart than China. The only China one's I've seen are a slip joint and one season the nobleman tin set.
