Would it be possible for Benchmade to make a BM 42 with stainless steel handles, using the original tooling? I was thinking about this and it would be pretty cool IMO. Some people are having "problems" with the light weight of the titanium handles, and I must confess I would like my BM 42's handles a little heavier too.
Another thought to solve the weight problem might be plain Ti handles (as in not skeletonized), but that would need new tooling i guess.

I believe the old tooling is long dead. I'm pretty sure they would have to set up a whole new casting to do a non skeletonized handle.

I think they should just go to an investment cast 17-4 PH handle on the 42 as another option, but that's me.

I also think we just bitch WAY too much about the 42. We should be happy we got that much and live with it. I am guilty of this myself though, but anyways, it's a thought.

Well, I didn't mean to bitch on the BM 42, I love it. But I was just wondering if they could cast stainless handles with the BM 42 tooling, so there would be a choice for a heavier or a lighter BM 42.

That's what my friend said when I showed him my Benchmade catalog. He was concerned about the price though, not the weight.

Dragon,

In most cases, stainless is cheaper to cast than titanium.

I din't take the price into consideration, but it might be another benefit.
But does anyone know if Benchmade could use their molds for casting stainless steel? Personally I don't know what the difference is between the castingmethods for Ti and SS, and if the molds for the Ti handles would hold when being filled with SS.

um...i dont think they pour liquid Ti into molds to make the handles...as far as i know they machine them down and laser cut them to exacting specifications
