Just about to order a Delica, what else should I consider?

I'd like to try carrying one of these one-hand folders to see whether I prefer it to my traditional barlows, trappers, etc.

I've about decided on a Delica as this is about the right size and price for the experiment, but because of my location I can't handle any of the knives in question.

No stores anywhere near me with Spyderco, Benchmade.

Shoot me some last minute advice before I whip out my credit card. Thanks.

BTW it's gonna take a lot to get me out of the habit of carrying those nice classic patterns.

Bill,

You may find yourself liking something else more in the future, but I haven't heard anyone who said they didn't like or regretted getting a Delica. It's an easy to carry knife, nice flat grind blade, with the typical sharp spyderco edge out of the box.

Your first one hander I take it. The Delica is a super choice. I prefer larger ones myself like the Endura. But that is personal taste. In its size and class the Delica is one of the best little knives around. Just for kicks you might also consider the Wegner Jr. One of the toughest little knives around. Your choice of the Delica is hard to beat. Dont think of it as giving up on traditional patterns though, of all the one handers I own and love, there is still something nice about using a good trapper pattern. I have a Remington Mini-Trapper that I like to take out and carry once in a while along with my one handers. Good luck, enjoy the Delica.

Ive owned a delica for about 4 years now....the lock seemed to have failed me from all of the use its been through.I took it apart and fixed it, now it works like new.In all its seen atleast 15,000 cycles.I tried to replace it with one of those dalton hawks.....now i find the hawk in the safe and the delica clipped back to my jeans!
In short, its a real good knife ....I will never try to replace it again except with another one.
My 5 cents,
Jay

What about a Lightweight Calypso Jr? I can't compare these in person so can't get an idea of heft, shape in the hand . . .

HELP!!!!!!

Uncle Bill,
The Delica is a fine choice, however you might want to consider the Native too. Same price range as the Delica the differnce being on the Native you get a choil to choke up on.

The Caypso Jr's. are also worth looking into. I have the New lightweight on order (VG10 steel) and I'm chompin' at the bit to get that knife! It is real sweet!

Whichever you choose, you can't go wrong with a Spyderco. They are a real stand up company.
They make fantastic products!
Enjoy!

Order from someone ya trust, or has been spoken highly of. I'm sure if you just hate the knife you could return it. Are you ordering a plain edge or one of the toothy versions?? If you can sharpen the serrations then you don't have any problems. If your only use to plain edges then get a plain edge. What about the New York Knife show coming up in November?? Can you make it to that show?? Anyways, let us know what ya get.

You can't go wrong with the Delica, especially for the price. Myself, I like the Micarta Calypso Jr. I like the ergonomics better and I like micarta handles much better than Zytel. The blade is aus-8 which won't hold an edge as well as ats-55 but it can take a very sharp egde and its easy to sharpen. I think it sell for $20 more.

Just do it!

I personally prefer the stainless over the plastic. (I know they don't call it plastic, but I cant remember right now what the proper name is.)

Great knife for the bucks.

The Delica is a good choice for a first folder, and was my first modern one-handed knife. But, I still think looks a bit more like a sadistic dental instrument than a fine tool. Offhand, I see three other good possibilities in the $50ish ballpark:
  • Spyderco Native PRO: better ergonomics, more curve to the blade; CON: steel not considered as good.
  • Spyderco Calypso Lightweight PRO: better ergonomics, blade full flat grind rather than hollow grind, better steel, "prettier" than the Delica; CON: blade thin enough to be a little more delicate? (really, I'm having to make stuff up here).
  • David Boye Zytel Lockback PRO: terrific cutting tool, great steel, more curve to the blade, choice of artwork for opening mechanism; CON: clip not reversible, knife pretty much right-hand only, handle perhaps too slim for some, BDS steel a bit more fragile?

I think of these, the Calypso would be my favorite; I've got one in a box, that's supposed to be a present for a friend, but it keeps calling to me...

Let us know what you end up getting, and what you think of it when it arrives...

Decisions, decisions...

Who has a lightweight calypso? Are they in all the mail order houses?

I'm having trouble finding one on the internet.
