When a BF user has not uploaded an avatar, the first letter of the username is used as the avatar. I have noticed that each "letter avatar" has a slightly different shade, too. Even members with the same first initial, the shade assigned to them is different from each other. It is useful for quick differentiation between posts at a glance. I think it's a very neat, understated feature.
