Just an older khukuri

Hello friends,
Received this nice simple khukuri about 2 weeks ago and just got a chance to take a pic. It has a steel bolster, and is 19" long. No karda or chakma, but it still has a tinder pouch. I was attracted to it because of the aggressive forward curve.

Spiral, any idea of the age? I was guessing just pre WWII only because of the use of steel instead of brass.

Enjoy.

Talk about character...

If only they could talk, eh Steve?

Aggressive curve you say?!?

I know I'm a noob, but I never saw anything like this.

I would like to know more too.

Ok now, Steve, THAT has to be placed in a position of prominence in your trophy room, perhaps above the mantle of the great fireplace, and flanked on either side by the Tiger head mount and and the cobra rearing to strike.:)

Small spot lights would serve to high-light it, and you can add a sound track to narrate the history of the Gurkhas and their Victoria Cross record.

The staff would have to dust it, of course, and perhaps attend to shining the newer models which evolved from it.

VERY nice.

Glad to see you posting, Dude.

Be well and safe.

If I asked the "staff" to dust it or anything else in my "trophy room", I might find myself on the wrong side of a khuk. LOL:eek:

Nice beast Steve!

looks village made scabbard & handle but old.

Blade must be nearly 15 inches? What does it weigh?

Spiral

Ooohhhh Me Likey!!!!   :D What if they could talk indeed! :)
To me it looks very similar to some of the wide leaf models AC was/is selling.

Nasty, If it could talk indeed.:)

Yvsa, it did to me as well, just a different curve.

Spiral, The blade is 15" exactly. The khuk itself weighs 1lb. 10oz. (0.116071 stone;) ). Spine thickness is .390 at the bolster, .320" halfway down.

Thanks Steve, 26 oz sounds very nice to me on a nice long & broad blade like that, usable as both a working tool & a fast weapon.

could be same age as the Atlanta longleaves, scabbard stiching & constrution is pure village though, tough as old boots, The old Nepali military scabbards are different from that re, the pockets & especialy stiching . Perhaps its village scabbard was to give it a second lease in life to someone old favorite? As you say if only they could talk.

Nice peace all round. I love these antique 15 inchers, so much charachter, speed & power combined.

Is it a flat grind?

Or very slightly hollow forged perhaps? ;)

Sorry I missed your intial questin Steve. Id say definatly first quarter of 20th century, probably pre. ww1 could even just be very late 19th century.

Scabbards newer coud be as recent as 1950s even & at some time it had a typical long blade village karda!

Selamat pagi Mohd,

There is a slight concave of about 1mm from the spine to about 10mm back from the edge. Then the remainder is convex ground.

Spiral, Thanks for the info. I figured pre WWII, but that's a close as I could guess.

Thanks for all the comments guys. This just proves that you can still find some bargains on Ebay.:)

Wow...just wow.

I have an older one that a friend gave me not too long ago, let's see if I can find a picture.
There it is, up at the top.

That's very nice!
I'm always afraid to bid on ebay khuks....there's so much garbage and fakes.

Here's the blade I hand picked out of the box of Blades that A/C had at bladeshow.

It too has a very subtle hollow.

I love the subtly hollow forged blades, they have so much less friction that they cut deeper at the same weight, there slightly stiffer in the length & should never get stuck in the cut targets either.
That combined with a convex bevel is brilliant! {Probably not so good for cleaving firewood logs though as fully convex, of course. All IMHO of course.}
If you ever get fed up with that one Steve you can always give me a shout.

Are you going to re handle the blade Shappa? is so what style? or just saving it as it is?
