I had never seen or handled one so I wasn't sure what to expect.

A seller had one brand new in a box with the stone washed blade finish (that's what I wanted, although I would have taken a black blade if that was all that was available).

The stone wash is different than the newer knives in that it is a coating (kind of like a ceramic coating). What really surprised me was how light it feels (It weighs 5 ounces but feels like a lot less for some reason). Since it has no liners (the lock side is all titanium and the other side is completely G-10, neither side has a liner) I'm sure that makes it slightly lighter.

Although it is somewhat similar to the bowie style CQC-13, I have never liked the looks of the 13 at all (and it is one of the ONLY Emerson's I have never owned) but the 12 looks totally different in just enough ways that I like the style quite a bit.

I'm not really sure why Emerson discontinued this model unless it was a poor seller from being ridiculously priced at the time.

I really like the thing myself and plan on keeping it for years.

Congratulations on the new Emerson! I've always had my eye on a CQC-12 just never pulled the trigger. The coating on your model is likely the "hard chrome" finish. I like the way it looks and I have a Mini Commander on the way with the same coating. I wasn't aware the CQC-12's were discontinued, I'll have to pick one up sooner rather than later. I hope your new knife gives you many years of service.

The guys at Emerson found a box of already marked blades so they decided to make some handles for them. They are a "get them while some are left" limited editions. Old blades found, new handles made late mid year. I believe that is the story.

I really like my silver plain edge one. Mine is the silver cera-kote like stuff. I don't think any of them are hard chrome but that would be cool.

The 7HD is constructed the same way, solid G10 non-lock side, solid Titanium lock side. My Nath Horseman is also that construction, and I actually like how it "leans" into my (right) hand due to the Ti side being heavier than the G10 side - makes it feel more secure in my hand.

Gratzee, on a great knife.
I hear there will be another run of HD7's.

I have had 2 of them in the past, carried my hard chromed one for a long time. I read on alot of different dealer sites that they are listed at the mid 5 ounce mark, but both of mine weighed in at 4.2.
