Hey BF

Like the title says for my 21st birthday my father surprised me with a Glock 17 (9mm). Its no the first weapon I've handled or shot, but it is the first that belongs to me. Now, I was hoping the members of this forum could help me out. I want to fimilarize myself with my Glock like I do with the knives that I own. After a lot of research and looking around I decided that there's no place better then to ask you guys for help in pointing me in the right direction. What sites or literature do you recommend i look at? Any and all the advice would be appricated. I want to make my father proud of the fact that he was right in trusting me with this great responsibility. Thanks in Advance.

P.S. Is the correct place or forum for such a post?

What a great gift! I own a G17 myself, it was the first pistol I ever bought. I have well over 10k rounds through mine and it still functions like a champ. I wish someone would gift me a gun, LOL!

My thoughts:

1. Familiarize yourself with the rules of safe gun handling. If you don't know them by heart you should go take a class (NRA basic pistol takes about a day and is a great starter). Safety is THE #1 most important thing. Unsafe behavior is usually dealt with swiftly and harshly at public ranges!

2. Shoot a lot! That's how you get better. There really isn't much to a Glock pistol- they are VERY safe to own/shoot and VERY difficult to break. Just keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire (see #1). The pistol has "3 internal safeties", but keeping your finger off the trigger until ready to fire is really the first safety.

3. When I bought my Glock the dealer told me not to clean it (specifically the "gunk" on the slide rails) until I put about 500 rounds through it. I guess the glop on the rails helps lap the frame/slide together? Not sure if this is true or not?

3. If you're into tinkering the Glock is EASY to work on. All you need is a 5/32 punch and you can add all kinds of aftermarket triggers/etc. If this pistol will be used for SD or for carry though I would advise against making any mechanical mods yourself. Leave it to a gunsmith so your "amateur" mods can't be used against you in court!

Have FUN!!!

Just shoot it!
Clean it once in a while
Do not over lube it
Learn where and when the trigger resets(a must for accuracy and speed)
Store it in a safe place

Some great advice so far. I'll second taking a basic handgun course. Practice a lot with some cheap ammo at the range, the more practice the better and the better shot you will become. Get a couple glock factory 9mm 33 round magazines while you can....congrats on the new pistol.

Sell it.

Keep your wrist locked while shooting it.. Limp wristing will cause failure to feed and slide cycling problems.. Shoot LOTS!!! John

I would look into a .22 LR conversion kit. They are around $400 i think and it will pay for itself if you shoot a lot. I am waiting till i can affor the G17 and the conversion kit before i buy

The .22 conversion kits are a good idea and will be an even better idea when .22LR ammo starts showing up in the stores again. I'm seeing 9mm on a pretty regular basis now.

A case of ammo, good sights, a good holster, and good reputable instruction is all you need. Practice a lot. Be safe!

Then more ammo, no need for crazy mods. Ammo. ;)

Congrats on the awesome gift. I have 3 glocks (19,26, and 24) and really enjoy all of them. If I were you, I would just keep it stock and shoot it.

I think along with everyone else's suggestions, also check out some of the good youtube gun channels. Hickok45, Mrgunsngear, and Sootch00 are 3 very informative guys that I subscribe to with alot of good glock videos without the attitude and bias of alot youtube video makers. Just dont start feeling down after watching Hickok45's vids. That guy can flat out shoot.

The way the ammo situation is right now has made me lose my fondness for guns. Hard to get anything at a good price anymore and if you can get it can only buy 1 to 4 boxes at a time in a store. It's just not fun anymore. Been waiting for 2000 rounds of .22 on backorder about 4 months says it will get here next month. We'll see. I like plinking with 308 surplus rounds with a rifle these days for $0.50 round the best. Can still find 9mm at $0.20 a round and in good supply but the 22 is almost non existant.

So far the advice has been great, and I do really appreciate all the great info. i'll definitely check out Glock Talk, and i've already looked into the handgun courses and plan on taking one in june. They have recently opened an indoor range close to where I live and membership isnt expensive yet so I might be joining. Any suggestions for websites or shops where I can buy 9mm round in bulk to save some moneybacks?

Pistol-training.com is great and pistol-forum.com is one of the best as far as the noise/solid info ratio goes. Good luck!

There are a lot of gun forums out there that have some healthy discussion. GlockTalk is one. I also frequent a local board (texasguntalk) and a nation board a little less frequently (thehighroad).

As for ammo, 9mm isn't as impossible to find as 6 months ago but still can be tough. The good news is Glocks aren't real picky. Freedom munitions sells in bulk for low prices. There are ammo search engines like gunbot which may be helpful in finding decent prices. Your range may sell ammo at a premium.

Oh and when you share your gift with your friends, be a stickler about gun safety. Always. Every time.
