Just bought a new Benchmade...

I owned a 583 for a while, heavy duty knife in thick D2...basically a variant on the 580 Barrage AO Axis model...this knife has great G-10 scales and is as fast as any auto in the delivery of the blade. Me, I prefer drop point models, but I remain impressed. This would make an excellent utility knife.

Looks like something I might want too. Please let us know your first impressions when you get it.

I received mine in the mail today. Very nice. Very comfortable scales, blade ideally centered between the liners, strong spring action, blade locks into place with a nice click and without any discernible play - I like this knife a lot so far. While maybe not razor sharp - the edge is quite sharp. Did I mention that the scales are extremely comfortable? To the original poster - I think you won't be disappointed with your new purchase :)

Ok I just got it. Its my first assist opener. It took me a few seconds to realize there was a lock on the back. Its a sweet knife, I love it! Opens smooth, sharp, nice size. Feels really well made like most Benchmades.

I will admit the 583-1 has perked my interests multiple times. But every time I end up saying no because I can't stand the big ugly W on the handle and the blade. Would it be possible to sand the G10 down to remove the logo?

Cool story bro. But seriously I don't know why they had to slap warn logos all over it. I just want a normal G10 Barrage isn't a prototype. ;)

To those that own a 583 I have a question. When closed with the safety on can you expose the tip at all by pushing on the thumb stud?

I have a 580 and when the safety is on I can push up on the thumb studs and slightly expose the tip. But I never use the safety and my 580 has never accidentally deployed.

Pix, or it didn't happen. ;)
