Hey all,

I got tired of buying disposable razors, so under the recommendation of a coworker who collects vintage razors, I picked up a Rolls Razor Viscount Model on-line for $30.

It has the build in sharpening stone and strop within the case lids, and it's in pretty good to new condition.

I was wondering what do I need for me to start shaving with it. How to I make sure it's sharp enough? Should I get a finer stone, or newer strop? Strop oil or paste? How to clean it? Store it properly?

I'm the FNG when it comes to reusable razors. So I appreciate any help, or any search terms to use in the search bar.

Bishop, Welcome. I agree with Mark, more info. at other places. Thats a very popular model and will give you a very good shave. I've been shaving exclusively with that same model for 2yrs. and enjoy it a lot. Mine's a 1953 Viscount. I've since stopped using the stone that came with it and only use the strop when traveling. I sharpen mine with 4 layers of black electric tape on ( after rebeveling on a 320 and 600g AO Norton stone); a Spyderco lapped fine ceramic stone, then a Belgium Yellow coticule,(lite slurry) on to a strop loaded with .5 green rouge and finish on a plain leather strop. The coticules are $$$ and a good dark, black Arkansas can be subtituted, you'll spend a little more time on that stone as they cut slower to have the same results. But they are half the cost. I have one of each and use on mine. Only purchase this from a reputable mfg. ie. Norton or a long term dealer you trust. 2X6" is fine. These two stones may run you 100$ and a good strop half that (use both sides of the strop). Inquire around and see what others say. Your in for a learning curve, be patient and enjoy the journey. By the way your in "Check". DM

I periodically use mine but just have never quite got the hang of using it. It can give a good close shave if properly sharpened and used.
