I just bought a Spyderco Sharpmaker after reading all the great things about it here on Bladeforums. While I anxiously await for the UPS guy I still don't get something.

When everyone talks about using a marker to mark the edge of the blade, what do you mean ?Do you really run it over the edge ?, How far? what's the purpose?

Thanks for the help in advance.

i recently got a sharpmaker as well.. and from what i understand you run a marker on the sides of the edge. does not have to be way thick.
then when you use a certain angle say 40 degrees a few times to see if the marker comes off. if not you might wanna try the 30 degrees and see if it comes off.

i guess its a way to find out wich angle is closer to original angle of the edge.
correct me if im wrong im a novice too

You got it!

Basically the point of the sharpie trick is to mark the VERY edge of the blade. Since there is now black (or whatever color you choose) on the edge, if you were to sharpen it, the marker on the edge will come off with contact to the stones. Now, you can look at the edge and see if you are really sharping the EDGE or just the Bevel. Hope this helps!

The marker will help you to see what you are accomplishing. In the case of the middle diagram, you won't get a sharp edge anytime soon.
