i just purchased a SS Endura online, and should have it in my hands by Monday or Tuesday of the coming week. i must admit i was very unsure of my purchase. not of the style, i am confident in the Endura on the whole. i just wasn't sure if i should have bought the SS (with AUS-6 blade), or the FRN handle (which comes with a VG10 blade). knowing i just couldn't live with the FRN, i went for the SS. will i suffer much in the blade department? how is AUS-6's durability and sharpness in contrast?

i almost went for the CF handle, but was unwilling to shell out an extra 50 bones for it. ugh, i'm so impatient, i can't help but buy right away, especially when it comes to knives. this will be my first official Spyderco, so it's probably going to shape my opinion of their products whether i like it or not. any thoughts?

Spyderco's heat treat will give you the most out of the AUS 6 steel. Sadly it is inferior to the VG 10 on the FRN version. The grind on the SS is different as well. That said, I love 'em both. You'll be pleased I'm sure.

Hi Abe. "We don't make no junk!".

Our AUS-6 is genuine Aichi AUS-6 (the original foundry), it is carefully heat treated and cryogenically treated as well. I'm sure, unless you're a "steel snob" the knife will please you. It is one of our most popular models.

My first Spyderco was an Endura with a zytel handle, back when they put the clip the right way (no worries with the SS, it's still pointed the right way, that being tip down). First thing I bought when I got to Korea in '93, and it served me daily and well for a solid year. I lost it the day I inprocessed back stateside. I've had and given a bunch of Spydies since, and never been dissapointed. Fantasic knives at great prices. The SS was the right call, I love the way they ride, you won't even know your carrying it, but it'll be right there when you reach for it, and the 4" blade is perfect for big and little jobs both. I can't what kind of steel they used ten years back, but I don't think the AUS-6 will dissapoint you.

thanks for the quick and honest replies. no Sal, i'm not a "steel snob" :D . in fact, i'm still pretty new to knives, which is why i'm entering the forums rather sheepishly. the Endura is gonna be a lot of fun for me, as it will be the largest blade i own (no snickering!).

i had a friend who lived by his SS Police back when we were in high school, and despite his best (yet unintentional) efforts to destroy it, the knife held up magnificently for years. i'm not sure if you folks use the same materials since then (circa '92-'93 or so), but it certainly speaks well of your craftsmanship.

i mentioned earlier that this would be my "first official Spyderco" knife, because i do own an FRN handle Delica. a pal from work gave it to me, but -- and i assume this is why he passed it on, the tip is snapped off :( and i can't seem to find a use for its fully serrated blade. however, the edge itself is still pretty sharp and he told me he used the thing every day, so this adds more high marks to Spyderco's image (at least, to me).

thanks for all the great comments. i'm very much looking forward to my Endura, and will carry it proudly!

Where did you see a CF Endura. The AUS steels from Syderco hold up great.I like the shape of the SS endura alot more than the FRN.

allyourblood,

Trust me...You will be very impressed with your stainless Endura when you receive it. I have one (fully serrated), and it is an excellent, stout folder, that is just the "right size", with just the right "feel".

I'd like to thank allyourblood for starting this thread. It has prompted me to dig out my Endura ss and has been riding in my pocket for the last couple of days. This is probably one of my most underappreciated knives. I sort of thought of it as redundant as my usual EDC is an FRN Endura and I also have a Police. But I realize now that the Endura ss has it's own unique feel and character, distinct from the other two models. Its like I got a great "new" knife this weekend!

My first Spyderco was a SS Endura PE. I love this knife! I have had NO problems with the AUS-6 steel. It still cuts very well and holds quite an edge. For the money, you can not beat this knife. This is a knife that you will be proud to carry. Spyderco = quality.

was my first spydie, and it has the zytel handles and ATS-55 blade (Seki City, Japan). If I'm not carrying that, I'm carrying the Gerber Covert.
