I just got this knife but can't find its issue date that I'm told is supposed to be at the base of the large blade. From pics online of the soldier model the knife I have definatley looks the part and I bought it from Lee Valley tools so I'm confident they didn't rip me off.

Am I looking in the wrong spot for the date or did they stop putting them on these knives?

I'm assuming you mean the silver "alox" handled ones?
There are models from both wenger and victorinox that are almost the same, and even have a different crest on them, with a rounded bottom shield.
These are the contract knives for the swiss army, and the date is on them.
However victorinox makes a civillian model of the soldier with the regular vic shield and no date stamp, which is the knife you have, and still a great knife.
I just bought the wenger issue and I love it.

This being my second SAK purchase ever, I'm learning the hard way to pay attention to the detail in ID'ing a blade. It looks as though the knife I bought is not the soldier, but rather the pioneer. There is a key ring loop and engraving plate on the side panel, both of which are characteristic of the pioneer it seems.

Either way, its a great sturdy little knife that I'm very impressed with. Thanks for your info as well.

Lee Valley is selling Sak's now? Don't see em in my last catalogue , must be an online only thing! Off i go to their webpage!
:)

I have a bunch of Pioneers with dates, but IIRC the lastest one is marked 98, so they may not be doing that any more.

For what I understand, if there was an "over run" of blades for Soldiers, they were used for Pioneer production runs.

the blue alox Farmers are nice to. The only difference is the farmer has the added saw.

My other favorite SAK. The Pioneer is my city EDC (along with a Delica), the Farmer is the "country" EDC. I've got Farmers in all three flavors. :D

FelineVet has 'em and he's got great prices and terrific service: fveap@earthlink.net

I think you can get them from one of the shopping channel websites also but I don't know for certain. FelineVet's your best bet for speed, service, and anyway you'll be helping the kitties! (He sells SAKs to support his charitable feline veterinary assistance program!)

Thanks Tim. They were a special limited run for QVC and they are now sold out there. I purchased about 35 of them till they ran out. They also had Red Alox Farmers. I still have some of each.
