The short answer is I think it's one of Benchmade's best currently available still in production, production knives. Especially at it's price, I don't really see anything else that can match it.
The Contego is an exceptional knife that excels on all levels that matter to me.
Starting with the blade. CPM-M4 steel is in a class of its own. Easy to sharpen with amazing edge retention. I'm the first to admit that I really can't see much difference between most premium steels in real world usage. CPM-M4 is a stand out in that regard.
The reverse tanto design, once you come to fully understand it's capability and the broad range of utility it offers you will appreciate it that much more. It offers the tip strength and piercing of a tanto and great slicing with a big bellied blade. Really is the best of both worlds in my opinion with no down side or trade off that I can see.
The lock, well it's an AXIS,. Strong, reliable, and smooth. A great locking mechanism and one of my all time favorites.
The handles and ergo's are subjective like with any knife. Personally I like it very much. Fit's my hand well and offers exceptional grip. Too much for some I've heard but for me it's just fine and comfortable as far as I'm concerned.
I guess I could go on and on but the bottom line is I think it's a great knife and one of the better knives BM has put out in a while at a very affordable price. Especially for a nice sized 4" CPM-M4 blade.
I like it so much it's one of the few knives I own multiples of. You really can't go wrong with the Contego.
Best of luck and enjoy your new knife!
