I just won my first straight razor on ebay! Its an old Boker and I cant wait. I know it is probably going to need a good sharpening and stropping, but I am pretty good there and shouldn't have a problem with that. Anybody have any information on the following razor? I cant wait to get it and try it out. I have been DE shaving for a while and cant wait to step it up!

I got a really good price on it, and I will invest in a really nice one later, but is this one alright to learn on?

I would get an older one to learn with. I got a brand new Dovo as my first straight razor, and I really shouldn't have. I have lots of experience honing knives and can easily get one in "shave-ready" condition, but straight razors proved to be a different beast altogether.

Keep that one until you get good. Go to Whipped Dog or Straight Razor Place to pick up a razor that somebody has already honed professionally; you can usually find something at around the $30 mark.

If the razor is in good condition, I would say so. I honestly don't understand why some razors are $30, some $50, and some over $300.

I don't know how one would rate yours, but it looks to be a good razor. I still say I wouldn't use that one to learn on, even if you got it for $17, unless you planned to get this one razor since the price was really good and not buy any others.

On every razor forum, you hear, "Everybody screws up his first razor" and "Everybody screws up his first strop."

I thought I wouldn't, but I did lol

I don't know; maybe you'll have better luck than I did.

clean it up give it a hone and go for it.

There is nothing you can do save for breaking the blade that will make it totally un-shavable. Worse thing that can happen is you cant hone it out right. Hell if you cant do it ill do it for you.

I Just dont like hearing people say get a cheap blade to learn or practice on, it just encourages you to buy more when there is no need.

Boker makes good razors and it looks like there is plenty of life left in it.

I agree that there's something of a learning curve both to sharpening and using a straight razor, but I didn't ruin my first. It was an antique square point and it still shaves just fine. I just made sure to do my research before taking it to the stones. ;)
