Picked up a 503 yesterday in a trade at a gun show
I tend to gravitate toward the 110, 112 and earlier 303 & 301 models
The previous owner knew how to sharpen, I did not do anything but a couple passes on the Sharpmaker
And that was just because of compulsive sharpening syndrome ( CSS)

Anyway, the born on date?

Tang reads

Buck ( Distinctive lettering, especially the B)
503
USA

Before 1986 ,I gather?
What year did this model start?

Thanks

BTW, love the SPS, thanks to all contributors

That's the old English script stamp. That model Buck brought it out in March 1977 with a 440C blade. Wood laminate scales were put on the model in 1981. A steel change in 1982. Block stamp appeared on it in 1984 or 85. DM

The first mention of the 503 Prince I could find was in a 1977 catalog supplement. What are the scales made of? Micarta or Wood? By "distinctive" lettering do you mean an Old English type font vs block letters?

Looks like David types faster than I do......

Micarta scales

That places my knife between 1977 and 1981?

"Old English" lettering, of course, I have read that description on this subforum numerous times

Thanks DeSotoSky and DM
