So,

I have found modified Hacksaw blades to be the best strikers...

What have you all found?

I will be honest, I am looking for a commercially available option, both to suggest, and to be able to procure, as opposed to creating one....

Thanks,
Marion

This is another topic for a sticky. A quick search will net you alot of info.

I just use my knife blade on my BSA Hot Spark rod.

I also scrape just the last three-eighths of an inch or so of my rod. It tapers it fairly quickly, but I think that is better than striking the whole rod and making it so thin that it is more likely to snap.

What's funny is I just had a thread like this and got that you should cut down hacksaw blades for strikers. I tried this and could only get certain portions of the blade to work(well.) I don't know if it's a certain quality blade that you need or if I was unlucky.

I use a piece of a file. I snapped a cheap small wood handle file down to about 4" total. 2" handle and 2" file. Tied rod and file together with 550 cord loop. Works awesome. Best sparks I have ever gotten. Nothing else I have found compares. All files work well but coarse round has proved to be the best so far.

I use the back spine of my knife, or the awl/reamer on my Vic Farmer Swiss Army knife to strike my firesteels.

I've not had too much luck with things like hacksaw blades myself. I think I need to try a cheaper (and thinner) type. I have had similar luck with the backs of blades, but the back of my Opinel works absolutely fantastic. I really like to use either the awl or can opener of any pocket knife, too.

Some people use the awl on their SAK's. I find the back of the SAK saw works better though. You can also square of the back of a blade with a file to make it work better as a spark striking tool.

Hey Guys....

Eye....

One thing you could do is either get a POS folder you don't care about and use it, or maybe even something like a Victorinox paring knife and use the spine..

One of my favorite strikers is a cheap a$$ed full tang paring knife from Meijers or something like that..

banding material works great! snap it off or you tin snips! it is like spring steel only not as strong. we use it in our machine shop for alot of little jobs, it is pretty hard. I have made some scrapers(strikers) that work great.
