Just did my first regrind

It was a really simple one. I had been complaining about the blnt tip design on my pacific salt for awhile, so when I saw a couple of folks post their mods I decided to give it a try. I just put a piece of masking tape on as a guide and flat ground the spine down to the tip, then finished it up with some 120 grit paper on block. I'm happy with the result and I think it's going to be a much more useful design for my uses.

Here's a stock "before" pic in case someone isn't familiar with the pacific salt.

Looks great buddy , I need to do this to my brand new Tojiro Gyuto my fiancé dropped......

That was your first regrind? You did a great job on that one! It looks professionally done and a real improvement!

Thanks all. I left a bit of gentle curve in the spine. You don't really notice unless you lay it on a flat surface. I was planning to take it all the way flat, but I thought it looked good where it was and I didn't want to thin the tip out too much, so I just stopped. This has really transformed this knife for me. I do a lot of fish cleaning with this blade and was always sorry it didn't have a finer tip. Well, now it does and it's going to get a lot more use. I was a little scared I was going to ruin it, but in retrospect I think it would have been harder to screw it up than to get it right. The tape was a great suggestion I got from someone on here.

5-10 minutes on the side of a bench grinder wheel. Go for it, there's nothing to it. The tape made a great guide.

Hmm, ok. Will have to check up on my benchgrinder today. Do you happen to have a picture of the blade with the tape on it before you did the regrind?

Thanks,
Charles

No, but take the knife and lay a piece of typing paper on top of the spine. Play around covering the spine from the exact tip to right where the curve starts just before the spydie hole and that's the line I used. You only need to tape one side. And grind away! If you're grinding tape then you went to far. Hehe. Seriously, just use the flat side of the wheel and you'll be surprised how easy it is to get it right. Take your time, but really it didn't even take 10 minutes on mine. There's really not that much metal to remove. And like I said, I started at the tip and left a VERY gentle curve in the middle (ie. I didn't grind quite all the way down to the tape in the middle of the spine). You really can't even tell unless you lay the spine on something flat, but it looks nice and that was just some extra metal I didn't have to remove. Mostly it was just laziness, and it was looking good so I figured I better stop while I was ahead. ;). Get after it bro. You won't screw it up. There's nothing to it.

P.S. The typing paper is good to play around with because it really helps u visualize the blade shape you are going to end up with before you tape it and start grinding metal.

Hey Charles, you aren't off the hook! Did you crank that grinder up yet?? We are waiting on photos!
;)

Wow, looks great!

I wonder if you work hardened the steel any by grinding it? Imagine if removing metal made it stronger?

Disclaimer: I have no idea if that's even plausible, let alone possible!

No, I work 5 days a week and I have been threatened with six days for the next three weeks. Good thing I have a nice boss. These are 7 to 8 hour days mind you. I MIGHT have time Saturday. But I have to rake and mow the yard too. And I have a new car. Sigh, there goes a bunch of knife money...
