Hi all, I've been a reader and occasional poster on various boards for a while now, but somehow Rat cutlery has escaped me until now! Ever since reading this board last night I'm dying to get one. I'm not a hunter, but do love a good camping trip and a strong, reliable mid size knife would be very handy.

Recommendations? I'm loving the pics of the RC-5, but thinking the RC-4 might be better. Oh yeah, and going to need an Izula as well! :D

For a first RAT it's hard to beat the RC-4. Don't worry too much about the others...you'll end up with them in due time! :D

If it was me I would probably go with a RC-4 as my first RAT. What color of Izula are you thinking about getting?

I have the RC-5 and it is awesome. I don't mind hiking with a heavier knife so its fine. However, I think the RC-4 is plenty of knife and a bit more versatile.

Most will tell you to get the RC 4 as a first blade. I did, and I am glad I did. Great all around blade!

I started with a RC3...then a RC4...an Izula...another RC4 and now an RC6. I keep telling myself I do not need the RC5!
But I know it's just a function of time, before I crack and call Roger again for another fix.:D

Welcome to one of the finest knife makers in the world!!!
You will enjoy whatever you get. Just promise to USE IT!!!

I got an RC-3 to start, was gifted my Izula (thanks again Jeff!) and an RC-6 is on the top of my list as soon as funds allow!

Like everyone else, the RC-4 and an Izula were my first. The RC-3 followed (very) shortly after.

Do you want an EDC blade or a camping blade or just a general all around?

I think the RC-3 is the perfect EDC and the RC-4 is a perfect camper/hiker/gen purpose.

Honestly, you cannot make a bad decision - you will be thrilled regardless of your choice :)

I have the RC4,5and 6. They are all excellent knives but the best one for general carry and camping use is the RC4. Mine quickly became my EDC blade.

I started out with an Izula prototype. Then I got an RC-3, then a 4, then a 6, then another 4 and 2 more 3's, then another Izula and finally a RC-5.

Oh, and a firekit and a few ESEE shirts, then the Izula patch and the ESEE patch.......:D

Hello EvanBNW & welcome!

From what you have indicated, I too feel that the RC-4 would be a good first choice for you. It is big enough to handle most camping chores and works well for many general tasks too. The Izula would be a great choice to have as an every day carry and would be a great companion knife to the RC-4.

The RAT line of knives will impress you with its quality and functional design which equals exceptional value!

i just received my rc 4 nice knife great quality. but if you have medium to large hands you may find the handle is not large enough tobe comfortable . noknife

I got a RC-3 first. After drooling over numerous pictures of the RAT line of cutlery, I was quite surprised how small it was, specifically how thin the blade and handle were. Of course that also translates to a lighter and very manuverable knife. I was impressed none-the-less.

I got the RC-5 next, and was even more shocked about how big it was. The blade is very thick and the handle is much bigger. In all it is a much heavier knife. Stark contrast to the RC-3. I guess what I am saying is that the photos I stared at for hours didn't seem to depict the significant size difference between the two. I am very impressed with both knives!!!

I DEFINITELY want a RC-4. It would seem to be a good balance between the two....a "DO ALL" knife.

I am also very, very impressed with the mag firestarter! I haven't tried it out yet, but look forward to comparing it to my "light my fire" military model.

I personally own the RC5 and the Izula, I love both of them but I agree an RC4 is probably the best first RAT to own.
