As a noobie to Buck knives i glad to discover models i like :) but sad when i find them no longer available :( Take the Yearling. Great look which gives a wink i think to the great Buck 110. Silly to ask perhaps but why was is it no longer made? Not enough sales or Buck just got tired of making it?

Anyway it's a perfect classy EDC for me and i wish it was still made...

I assume when you mention the Buck "Yearling", you are referring to the 709 medium two blade executive? If so, the model was introduced in the 1982 Buck catalog, and it was cancelled in 2002. Lagging sales. When it first came out, it was known as the Compadre. Not sure why the name was changed. If your model has Script letters on the blade tang, as well as the handle shield, it's a pre 1986. Models had a unique year symbol after the model number beginning in 1986.

The reference to a 'wink' and the 110 I'm not sure that I agree with, if I'm reading your thought correctly.

Yes, referring to the 709. The paper with mine from ebay names it the "Yearling". So it had other names? the Executive, the compadre, any others?...the wood scales and shape of the bolsters remind me of the 110...just a ;)

thanks for the info...are they hard to find?

The knife was known first as the 709 Compadre, and then it was renamed the Yearling. Executive refers to the type. It's smaller cousin, the 705 Pony is the 2 blade small Executive. They come up on auction sites quite often. My mentor has just published an article for "Knife World" on the 700 series. Try and get a copy when it comes out. The article is a great Buck read.

Thanks for the Info, HR...you mention mentor, are you an aspiring smith? I will try and find a copy of knifeworld...

"Knife World" is a newspaper type publication. I have seen it on news stands, but not all the time. I now subscribe to it. They have asked me to write an article on the 20th BCCI Party in Post Falls in July.

Larry Oden has written the article for them on the 700 series. It's actually an updated version of an earlier one he wrote for the BCCI Newsletter.

I just received the current issue of "Knife World", which has Larry Oden's 700 article on the front page. The title of the article, 'Cowboys and Cutting Horses', is right on target with the theme of the five (5) models that Buck created. The article is about collecting the 700 series. The pictures that enhance the words are well done. Larry has helped me tremendously in my quest to collect this series. The publication is probably worthy of your "investigation". Larry's article is a "must" for your Buck understanding of models no longer produced.

How about scanning that article for the rest of us??? Then we could decide if it was worth the subscription... :)
