Just feed my HR a shoe!

I picked up a shoe out of the garage that I wanted to throw away and used my Holing Rat to cut it into lil peaces. Well I just got nothing else to do! :D

Although I really need to sharpen mine (tips are always welcome) it slices the leather and rubber fine. But I realised the knife is missing serious penetrating power, especially next to a Becker7, Mora and S&W double edge boot knife. The Mora and S&W stabbed the material like butter and the BK7 also rips true it pretty fast but the HR really stayed behind.

All those are knifes made for a differed purpose but I was/am really surprised. I thought that my BK7 and HR were at the same level of penetrating leather by stabbing it. But not by far.

I’m I just using the wrong knife for the wrong job or it it because of the tip shape? What is you commend on this!

thin the edge out. I used a 10 degree with a 15 degree microbevel. You want to see some wicked slicing abilities. When you sharpen also sharpen the point dont let it round off.

A coot does both slicing and sticking. I use mine on white tail. Does fine.

I’m going to try something like that. Just bought some 1000 and 1200 sandpaper.

Your Howling Rat eats souls?!

:D

Pietje010, nice file work on the becker.
and I know only Rats here, sorry

must a been a bad ..really bad shoe! :D :D

The penetrating power is absolutely depend on where the pointed part of the knife making angle 9the miner factor is the thichness and the edge angle.)

To check on the matter , you hold the handle of the knife and you point in front of your self.
The the tip of the Howling Rat will point to the left side of the target in front of you and as for the Becker , because of the drop point of the knife is more sharper angle you will find that the tip of the knife is more straight. This is the reason why you have better penetrating power on other knife. It is because the angle of the knife tip.

have you try YOJIMBO of Spyderco ?
If you wanted the best penetrating knife , you chose that kind of knife tip design.

For your information, I have tried Becker on a camping trip, and I use vaiuos knife to cut Wild Bamboo, the Becker was one of the knife that the edge ware - off and not the Battle Rat.

I didn’t use a file. Its more a three stap process. First I used sand paper to make the lower part of the handle more round and economic. Then I used a small metal-saw to make the square pattern for more grip. At last I used sandpaper to make it more smooth and free of any ‘sharp egdes’.

What do you mean? Do like the BK7 over your BR for this kind of job or is this about the steel quality?

The BK7 it truly is a nice, versatile and not to heavy camp knife (with or without this handle modification).

Sorry for my unclear statement.
I meant to mensioned on steel quality toward the Wild Bamboo which was very tough material .
