Just finished first hollow grind/ on the new KMG

Good looking knife, Ranger. Save those fingers, get your self a pushstick.

Try a piece of 3/4" dowel rod 5" long or so. About an 1/8" back from the end, saw it about half way thru then cut it in from the end, forming a ledge. Put the tip end of your blade on the ledge to hold it up and help control the tilt. I got tired of burned fingers years ago :)

Very nice. I am hoping that my kmg is here tommorrow. What were you using before you got the kmg?
Rick

Thanks, I was using a Sears 2 x 42". I bought it on sale for $169.00 I got pretty damn proficient with that sucker, I actually burnt it up, and got a 3 hp motor from HF for $69.00, its running strong again.

Great job. Except for the mosaic pins, the handle looks like old school from the 70's. I like it.

I use a piece of oak board, about 1 1/2 X 1" aprox., and get it a few feet of it, and just cut more when I need it. I cut the upright part of the ledge at a slight forward angle so I don't have to hold my hand so straight. You'll see when you start using yours.

That knife looks like it is hollow ground. do you use a push stick for hollow grinding?

Michael

Well we sure are keeping Mr. Frink busy. I am expecting my KMG tomorrow. I just hope the UPS guy gets here while my wife is out.

Great work Ranger - I plan on doing up some of those Busse blanks I got from you at BLADE show last year.

Best,

PJG

Aiko,

Yep, I'll bet he is busy. I think that you have me confused with another Ranger. Did you get them in GA or vicinity? Then it is prob Justin G. Nonetheless, grind away.

I did not use a stick...but I think I am going to start, I could barely get one pass without cooking my thumb. But, I am hard headed, so I will probably do several more before I start.

Looking good, very clean and elegant. Only thing is, you might need anouther pin or two to keep the handle scales from falling off. :D

I've tried push sticks and never could get them to work for me, so I use a magnet. It looks like the blade grinding magnet sold by some of the supply houses, but smaller. If I remember right they were used in the sign buisness when making channel letters on a steel table. That and after a while you get thick calluses on your thumbs.

What's the steel and handles?

Its a real light piece of ironwood that I got out of the desert out here, and it is O1. Maybe I will add a few more pins on the next one.

I use a magnet when freehand hollow-grinding also. I find that it works so good I have to actually lay some masking tape on it because I can't get the bloody blade off otherwise. Sure makes for a good grind imho, because your fingers are removed from the spinning belt. Once the contours are hollowed in, I slow down the belt speed and just go gently by hand to refine the grind anyway. Yeah the magnet is a great idea. I tried Kit's push-stick suggestion a while ago and never really got the hand of it. I like the magnet because it goes better with my "organic tool rest." :)

Btw... Ranger... that's a danged-fine knife you got there. If that's your first hollow-grind, I think we can expect some wonderful things from you.

ALRIGHT!!! Rick if you need any pointers come on over. Does this mean that at the next Hammer-In you be in the contests????
  Happy for you Bro!!!

I hope so George, at least I can't blame my poor craftsmanship on crappy equipment any more. :D ( wait a minute, maybe thats not such a good thing  )
Rick

That's a great looking knife! I doubt that the KMG had much to do with the outcome. "It is the Indian...not the arrow" AR ...you certainly have talent!

Sincerely,
Rob
