My Chiruwa cleaned the dead branches, vines and small trees easily and quickly. The small vines, like weeds, gave me the most trouble. Too thin to offer resistance. The limbs 1/2" and bigger were a one swing effort. I suppose my BAS or Sirupati would have done the job more efficiently but the ruggedness of my Chiruwa is my "garage" field tool. For a change, I had fun working in the yard. Two minutes on the Baldor buffer and burnishing with the chakma, the edge gets sharper with each use. Why?;)

Because it's Magical :) I agree, yard work is funner with a good Khukuri:D

There's lots of technical info on this in Cliff Stamp's reviews.

I actually have not had that happen to mine yet. Mine stays sharp, but not shaving sharp like at first. Also, I have had to remove a few dings - but I have never hit the ground with it - they just came from hard hitting on the trees...maybe the bark?

Anyway, no major sharpening needed yet.

Bark contains grit from the wind, certain types are worse than others. For serious axe felling, it was common to use one axe to strip away the bark (and roots, and low lying branches), and another to actually cut through the trunk. The bark cutter didn't need to be that sharp, and thus you didn't care about degrading the edge.
