So yesterday I was just fooling about and got a crazy idea. I made a slurry of fireplace ash and a little water and wiped it on with a sponge over a practice piece I had tooled, a new design. The slurry in the beveled tooling looked pretty neat, a grayish silver (OK grayish gray). Really highlighted the tooling though. I wiped the excess off the surface pretty vigorously and the ash stayed in the tooling. I didn't take a picture.

So, questions, is this semi permanent after applying finish coats? If not is there a product that can be used to highlight the tooling in a similar way? I don't think I'd get satisfactory results with tiny paint brushes, the dye would tend to wick too much maybe?

Semi permanent , maybe after you use a finish like WyoSheen or ClearLac or something similar. These would seal the color and ash and make it more difficult for it to decide to leave the project. Careful with the application through because they might also remove what you wanted to save.

Now if you are interested in highlighting your carving and tooling , there are already products out there made specifically to do that. Look for Antique paste or liquid and Highlighter which I think is a liquid. I'm not sure because I don't use either.

I took some pics today of what I do. Should be able to whip em into a wip tomorrow.

thanks Paul, just what I needed, the highlighter looks promising and I found a great old WIP by Bailey Knives to boot.

Hi Dave that would be great. I didn't see you post at first.
