We've not had one of these hypothetical scenario's for a while so :

Let's pretend that you have been chosen for some reality TV programme where you are going to be dropped off in the Alaskan wilderness mid Winter and can take only one edged tool.

This tool can be a Knife, Axe or saw but you can only pick one and it must serve all your needs for one month.

Obviously you will need to make shelter, fire(You would have a PSK Firekit), trap making, food prep etc.

What would ya pick ?

Even though I'm not very proficient with an axe, I like to pretend I am and I think for Northern wilderness, something like the Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe would be a good compromise for weight and portability vs. ability.

I hope to one day be good enough with an axe that I can do everything with it, like some of the old timers. Everything from shelter making and wood processing to trap making and field dressing game.

I think that a large knife, with a blade in the 10" range, is ideal for the whole "one knife for everything" scenario. Big enough to hack through the soft woods you're going to find in a boreal forest. Still manageable for finer tasks, i.e. gutting small game, trigger carving, etc..

IMHO, the ESEE Junglas and TOPS Hoodlum Knife are just about perfect, though I think I would take the Junglas with it's full tang construction and added mass. Both fine knives, easily field maintainable and comfortable, even with gloves.

If I'm going to have to handle a cold enviroment-

-I would choose a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp or Scrap Yard Dog Father

Love the handles when its cold, would not worry about breaking either of them.

Might take the second from the Top Siegle--Chops very well and does great for food prep.

Also love the bottom Siegle

Would not chop as well as an Axe-but would do everything else better.

Camp Tramp the 3rd from the top(for those that do not know)

My main concern would be to have a tool that would not break while building a Shelter,Battoning, etc)

I'd take my HOGFSH for a 1 knife only scenario

WilliamM that ASH1 would do everything you needed if it is HOG which it looks like it is.

There is only the one. Smatchet.

I sold the ASH-1 -too heavy for my tastes.

It would be an Unbreakable knife for sure

I'd go with a knife I do not have yet, a Gossman Bolo.

Here's Brian_T's that he posted in the 7-10" blade thread.

Аn axe - Gransfors Scandinavian Forest Axe :)
For a big knife -CS San Mai Trailmaster, but I actually don't know how strong it would be.But it sure chops awsome !

If I was proficient with an Axe..

I would take a large knife. Not sure which at the moment. A lot of choices.
