Hey gang, I usually like expensive, overbuilt knives. I must admit however, I am resisting putting my Medford 187DP into my pocket for hard EDC use! And, as many of you are well aware, I am astonished with the quality of the inexpensive knives being built by many companies these days. I am sharing this post just for fun. I am sure many of you are already aware of this knife, but just had to share this after getting a Steel Will Barghest today. Took it out of the box, was of course expecting to immediately find something stupid or unacceptable about the knife. I am very picky! Yes, it is large! Yes, it is overly heavy! But I love this knife. So comfortable. Perfect flipping action with flipper tab. Perfect fast or slow thumb stud opening. Looks like it would be a pocket shredder with the pattern in the scales, but it is not. And best of all, I would not hesitate to carry this beast and use it. $64.95 at Knife Center. Give me a break, how can this be? (I am not working for Knife Center).

9/13/22 Update:
Been carrying this knife a few days, using it. I am really impressed. I have a beasty Medford Marauder sitting on my desk, deciding if I am going to keep it or not. I have to say however, this Steel Will almost fulfills the same beast knife desire and I could buy about 6 or 7 of them for the price of the Marauder! I took the Barghest apart, used my favorite CLP, put it back together, blade centered. Sure it would be cool if the screws were larger and more robust. But again, this knife is under $90. If you like large (9"), heavy knives, once again, I really suggest checking this knife out!

I used to own the similarly priced Steel Will Plague Doctor (4" version), and it was a solid knife. Felt like a budget Benchmade Adamas, and was a lot of knife for the money.

If you like knives in this style and price point, check out the Kizer Sheepdog XL and the Cold Steel 4-Max Scout and Spartan. Off-Grid Knives also makes some budget beasts, and the one knife of theirs I owned -- the Black Stallion, smaller than your Barghest but still a little chonk -- was just right for its price.

How do you like the Off Grid knives? I always get bombarded with sponsored ads for them every time I pull up Amazon.

I've come really close to picking one up a couple of times just to try one out as an extra beater knife.

That's the only one I've owned. It was a good buy for its price, easy to recommend.

Forgetting all issues of country of origin and speaking only on knives, my main dislike of the actual quality Chinese folders (Rike, some of the designer WE stuff (thinking of Elijah Isham, very cool stuff, just not for me, the Microtech Bravo) is the "futuristic" look of the folders. Titanium + carbon fiber, to me, feels soulless and robotic. To me, the far-out look of Spyderco is as about as non-traditional and "futuristic", "weird" looking as I will go.

I will admit I like the Sheepdog... action very smooth, feels like quality, but without my usual complaints, as micarta gives it just enough of that down-to-earth sense that would not exist if it was a titanium monster. I got some at falling-off-truck price and it is a good reason to try 10V in a knife that I do not have to worry about - say, the worry imparted onto the idea of sharpening a $200+ Maxamet PM2. I am grateful for their existence. I can hold it in my pocket, much like a Rough Ryder, understanding what I have but still feeling like this is pretty cool.

Nice knife. Looks kind of like if Cold Steel had a baby with Ontario's non-RAT folders...

Thanks for your response and the cool knife photos. Ya, I almost bought that Kizer Sheepdog XL, but held back as I could not figure out how carrying around that much extra steel on the blade was going to be practical. I checked out the Off Grid knives, they look really good. Thanks
