I found some pics of people hiking in the early 20th century and thought I would share. I know that most of you would get a kick out of how people used to dress for the outdoors. I can actually recognize a couple of the places.
It sure seems that people used to hike with a different mind set then we do today. They went out to the outdoors to enjoy company of others while now we seems to do it more as exercise and how far we can make it. Enjoy the pics.

Great pics, Thanks for posting. I always tell my Son how back in the older days Men always wore a Suit and Tie, No matter what they were doing. Like Oliver on "Green Acres". Interesting.

In Scotland, a tweed jacket is an excellent hunting jacket, where the tweed is camouflage in the Highlands
Tweed is incredibility hard wearing wool
So a tweed jacket and woolen breeches are not the turn of the century
And of course a tie is just what civilized people wear.............

Boy, my granddad would have liked those folks!! If it was big enough to bite, it was big enough to put on the stringer!!

It reminds me of my grandfather. He introduced me to the outdoors up in New Hampshire at an Adirondack shelter called Blue Brook Shelter by Wild River by Spider Bridge entrance. Anyways, he always wore slacks with a perfect crease & slept on them folded just right. After 6 nights he would walk out looking just as fresh & primpoed as the day we walked in. Appearance was always important to him. He really looked "spiffy" the Saturday nights we would travel for sometimes jhours to go to some far off town hall or Grange meeting place to do what I loved for the first 20 years of my life: square dancing. He past a few years ago now & I find myself writing my grandmother of all the wonderful journies both she & he blessed me & my siblings with. Aw yes, the ancient art of hand writing a letter is, from my first dings, the best gift for a loved one! Sorry to stay, thank you for sharing the photos & jogging memories.

I knew an older guy long time ago who always dressed good enough to go out to eat at a nice place And that was for an all day hike. He never hiked fast but covered many miles in a day. He considered it self respect to dress like a gentleman.
I love the pic of the lady with the fancy hat.
