I have a stash of drawings consiting of designs I very much like, but which may not be everyones cup of tea. Every few years when I get worn out from working on orders, I extend my working day and complete one of these pieces. Many, like this one, required a considerable investment in design time to perfect small details which are not noticed at first glance. Care was taken to ensure that all lines flow with the design in the open and closed positions. Note the lines of the blade provide a feeling of movement in the closed position, as seen when a bird is skimming a water surface.
As I mentioned above, not for everyone, but it was a joy to make, and I love the piece.

you've made some pretty unbelievable knives, Wolfgang.

But this one is the best, (to me). So much personality and movement, and a departure in many ways from what you are best known for making, but with all the same hallmarks of quality and detail.

That you've chosen to represent a naturalistic subject matter in a literal way seems to be something new, as most of the pieces I've seen of yours are inspired by a naturalistic view but do not give away too much as to their inspiration. It's there, but takes some time to learn to see, (at least that's how it was in my case).

It appears that you do this more literal styling extremely well. Better in many respects than some knives from very well recognized knife makers who are known for working in this style, in my opinion.

This knife has Don Guild all over it:) I wonder if it will find its way into his extraordinary collection...

Bravo!

This one leaps off the computer screen and takes flight, Wolfe.

Your work at its' best.....this must be significantly more satisfying than watching a console.;)

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

It's whimsical. This must have been a pleasure to be able to allow. All your work is so elegant and distinguished and rich, while this has all that and a wink to the masses. ;)

Of course I like it. :)

Wolfe, I'm so glad you posted this, so we can all see your amazing work. This is a real beauty. But they all are. It seems like, on a scale from 1 to 10, they are all 10!

It was a pleasure to meet both you and your daughter at Solvang. I think I might have mentioned, at the time, that if there was any other maker's work I would like to collect, it would be yours. Well, my first Loerchner arrived less than a week ago. Sure glad I found it!

Best,

Bob Betzner

Amazing, what's not to like. There will be one lucky and happy collector very soon I reckon.

It is real satisfying when you get to do something that is not on a waiting list . Of course I'm talking from a differant level. Great looking project. Paul

Marcel, yeah it's absolutely magnificent, but I still am stuck on the daggers first.

It's pieces like this that make me pause and wonder if I should sell all of my shop equipment!!!!

That is just outstanding!!!    :)

Thank you for all the kind comments guys. I agree with STeven, figurals can end up badly at times. Like most makers, it would love to have the time to explore all the ideas I have stashed away. Maybe when my order backlog has been cleared up.
The materials in this one are:
440C blade, 416 scales.
Inlay is 1/8 " thick rose and yellow gold, and Brian Lyttle nickel damascus.

You're not the only one with such feelings...

Wolfe:
May be (and only may be) it's not everyone's cup of tea. But your work is always inspiring and impossible to criticise in any technical and artistic issue.
May be you can only say "I don't like it". But isn't my case anyway...

Thanks for showing your work.
