I just picked up a Buck 121, and a 116 in excellent condition. When were these discontinued, and what is the value? Thanks for your help.

Rattler,
The 116 came along in early 1963 and was discontinued in 1991. The 121 was introduced in 1964 and discontinued in 2000. The value of both will depend on how old they are. Can you tell me how each is stamped? That is the best clue in determining the age.

Take care,

The 116 is stamped BUCK USA 116. and it looks like micarta spacers. The 121 is stamped the same with 121, and has the micarta spacers as well.

Thanks for the help.

Rattler,
We added model numbers to our blade stamp in 1972. The next change came in 1986. I have not found a reliable method of determining the age of a Buck knife stamped like yours are. Sometiimes the paperwork will be dated and that helps narrow it down some.

Not particularly collectable, unless they are mint in the box. We made so many of them from 72 to 86.
Hope this helps,

Joe,

Does the sheath snap or the "pinned" pommel help in dating knives that were made before 1986?

Tom

Tom,
The pinned pommel method was used from about 1963 to present so that does not help us much. If I can determine when we switched away from the flapover holster style sheath, I can narrow it down some more. I am working on the chronological history of the Folding Hunter right now but will try to squeeze some time in to research this some more.
