I was looking at the Buck display case at work and I realized that there were two 118's on display, one of which was where a 105 was suppose to be. Upon closer inspection I realized that this knife was much older. The handle has four micarta spacers as opposed to two, and there is no date mark next to the model number. I asked my manager about the knife and he has no idea where it came from or why it was there. There is no box and no sheath so I convinced him to sell it to me for $10.00. I know it has to be older than 1986 because there is no date marking. Are there any other characteristics to look for that might tell me when it was made?

Don't know about the age of the knife, but
you should be able to purchase a sheath from
Buck.

10 dollars? Sounds to me like you got a
great deal.

Buck has discontinued the 118 but they might have some sheaths left.

JeffO,

One thing to look for on that knife is the color of those spacers. In about 1969 i believe, we switched from "bone hard fibre" spacers to the red micarta found today. You can tell the diference if you have one with red micarta to compare it too or if you have seen a lot of the bone hard fibre knives. I happen to have in front of me the very knife you described. This one has micarta spacers and a flap over sheath. I was able to scroung up a sheath for you but it is not the old flap over type. Those are all gone.

Take care,

Woohoo! You found me a sheath for it! How do I go about ordering that from you?
It is red micarta. Any idea when they switched from four spacers to two?

Jeff,
I think I may have an old flap-over sheath for the 118 at home. If you are interested, I will look and see. I know if I have one it is used.
