Just found this forum in my quest for info about a knife that I saw at my gundealer's display case.

As I was placing my order for a Kershaw Blackout, I noticed a S&W H.R.T. I asked the salesperson if I can look at it more closely and to my amazement, I can open it as fast as an auto.

Is this knife any good?? I try to stay away from knives that are made in China but the quality of this one is quite superb. Is it worth $50.00??

BTW, Is the Kershaw Blackout a good choice for personal defense where I could not carry my Glock19???

Thanks for any feedback.

P.S. I am the same riddler of AR15.com, Glocktalk, AK-47.net and Assault.web.

64 reads and not 1 reply!!!! Is there something that I am missing here?? Is there a secret handshake that I did not do?? Pray tell me!

hey bud welcome - i would take the kershaw over the s&w imho, the s&w knives have a crappy rep - i would get the boa, if i had to have a kershaw - more $$, but better knife - i had a blackout though, it was ok, just dont spend more than $50 or so on it - if ya are gonna spend $100 or so lotsa better stuff around imho (ie BM, spyderco, REKAT,boa etc) hope this helps ya........

PS - no the SW is not worth $50 imho, would rather have CRKT kasper, or lotsa other stuff for that $$ - i might would go $50 on the whirlwind.....check out prices on www.onestopknifeshop.com www.knifecenter.com www.knifeoutlet.com and i bet they can beat your local shops prices, badly - looked at a spydie atarmate fri, my local shop wanted $135, have found for $99 on the web, any of the above guys are great to deal with, also check out mike at www.newgraham.com they are good too

My opinion of the S&W HRT folder is somewhat different. I think it is a pretty good knife and worth the $50.00 to $55.00 I have seen it selling for. It is designed by Darrel Ralph and built to a fairly high standard.

Hey riddler,

welcome aboard, I just joined up not to long ago too, before this I hung out at talk.shooters.com so i'm also a gun nut :)

Perhaps it's my own personal prejudices or the prejudices injected upon me by my vietnam-era father... but I'll admit I don't like the chinese and so I never buy their products if it can be avoided.
I happen to believe that bunch of kids making 10 yen a day aren't going to be motivated to make the best quality knives in the world also...

if you're going the cheap route, might I suggest Outdoor Edge's Kit Carson Zytel Magna it costs about $40 and from what I hear is a fantastic knife for the money.
If you've got more dough handy i'd suggest Spyderco, Emerson, Benchmade, Masters of Defense, REKAT, or Microtech for defense knives in the $100-$200 area.

If you've still more cash, perhaps a custom like a Chris Reeve Sebenza or Kit Carson Model 4 would be more up your alley - but these kinds of knives are easily out of my personal price range.

Put it this way, i'm getting a new pocket folder REAL soon for defense/utility/edc, my choice? Emerson CQC7 Tanto in Black T - price? $110 sounds good to me!

DO NOT HESITATE on the Smith and Wesson Quick-Flick HRT! They are some of the most solid and quickest knives I have seen! I have flipped mine over 1000 times and still NO blade play and the lock still hits the same spot every time! I own 2, the plain edge for everyday carry, and I picked up a black coat plain edge to put aside if I ever lose the first. VERY SHARP!:)

for 50 bucks you should buy yourself a spyderco delica or endura, kershaw knives are good quality also. smith and wesson knives are cheap crap.

welcome riddler!!!!
I am a NEWBIE!!!! I just started to be a little more "post active" I spend most of my time just lurking, reading, taking notes, printing posts, printing out the georgeous photos. I have a loose-leaf now with approx 400 NUMBERED pages. Gee, I call it my Blade foruM ( No S...Spark, don't get Lifter to beat me up!!!!!) Now, I can go back to my "book". page 63 to 70 for example is all the posts ond photos of DALTON knives. Man, can you learn and LEARN and LEARN!!!! The FOLKS here are GREAT. have fun!!!!!!!!wolf;)

imho if ya want the best knife for the $$, go to newgraham and get a benchmade 800 series, $67.50 for the 800S, and about $80 for the 800M2HSS w/M2 toolsteel, 3X better knife than ANY S&W, and about the same price, certainly worth the difference - lotsa people dont like SW because of politics, i just dont think they are as good as CRKT, etc if ya wanna go the cheap route - lol now ya are really confused huh?? imho the best deal going ie the BM 800 AFCK, one of my favorite knives (and i have BM,emerson, spydie, crkt,REKAT,GT,among others) i dont think ya can go wrong on one for less than $70..........and the black out aint bad, but i like the avalanch i think its called w/the G10 handles, better, zytel looks cheap to me now.....

Yeah I'd definitely say go with something by BM...for a few bucks more you'll be glad you did!

Riddler,
Welcome to Bladeforums! :)
Buy the knife you'll carry the most. The Boa is a nice knife. The S&W HRT I know nothing about. Will you be carrying just one knife?? or will you have a left side and right side blade?? Just wondering. :)

Welcome to the Forums, its a cool place to learn, and find out about new knives and such and I think you'll enjoy it here. Now about knives
I have a friend that has a S&W folder and I tried it and its not
tooooo bad but try some others if you can before you buy. There is alot of good stuff out there and alot of crap. If you like the S&W and it feels good in your hand and you like the looks then buy it but IMHO I think there are alot better buys out there so take a look around, in the meantime enjoy the forums.

The Smith and wesson quick flick is the SAME quality of CRKT.
The same maker makes the knife.
I insisted that the quality be good or no name on the knife.
I also like the straight fighter. Its a great knife at a great value.
Sorry about the S&W politics. I stay out of it!

Try the quick Flick!
Its faster than an auto!

If quality is a question In a few short months your worry will be over.
Cant say anything more than that at this time. But you will be pleased!

I would second that recommendation on the AFCK's...I have a used mini-AFCK and its a fantastic knife, even as the past owner put some real use into it

nitin

the s&w's are ok, i just dont hink they are as high a quality as the BM AFCK AT THE PRICE new graham is selling discontinued models for - the small amount of $$ ya spend to get the BM = much much higher quality imho - i looked at a SW at the gunshow recently, and while much improved over old SW stuff, still not like a BM, etc more like a CRKT i agree - the new AFCK is pretty much the same as the old except a oval vs round hole, due to expiration of licensing from spyderco - and the new AFCK sell for around $110 or so, and the M2 version is prob $140 - so not dissing the sw, but i just dont think its in the same league as the AFCK, which is one of the all time great designs, w/a very smooth action, and a handle which fits my hand well imho, especially if the knives cost about the same....

i wish ya could hold both in your hand at the same time ya would know what i mean...

between the smith and the kershaw, i'd pick the kershaw. they are always amazingly sharp and fast. (i still have the scar on my thumb to remind me)i didn't like my smith when i had one, but i loved my kershaw. all of this, however means very little. read all of the advice that others want to give you, consider it, and then buy the one that you lilke best.
